This listing represents a series of three Fire Inspector positions available based on prior experience and certification. Fire Inspectors are responsible for ensuring compliance with the District's adopted fire code through a variety of tasks, primarily through the inspection of existing and new occupancies, the inspection of fire protection systems, and assistance with other fire code enforcement activities. For Fire Inspector I, work complexity is considered entry-level and is performed under moderate supervision and guidance. Fire Inspector II requires a considerable amount of expertise and the ability to work with limited direction or guidance. Fire Inspector III requires an extensive amount of expertise and the ability to work independently without direction or guidance on reoccurring activities; the incumbent will lead significant projects or programs within the Community Risk Reduction Division. Fire Inspectors may also assist with community outreach, public education, and other risk reduction activities as assigned. Please review the three Fire Inspector Levels below:

Fire Inspector I

Essential Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Duties and functions include the following:

  • Perform inspections of fire protection systems, buildings, and properties to ensure compliance with the district's fire code and related standards.
  • Perform fire and life safety inspections of licensed facilities.
  • Prepare and maintain inspection reports.
  • Resolve compliance problems with various parties through written or verbal communication and maintain a record of said communication.
  • Participate in pre-development and/or pre-construction meetings with members of the design community.
  • Perform public education services as requested.
  • Prepare and participate in the presentation of training to various audiences.
  • Attend training classes and conferences on a variety of fire code-related topics.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised: None.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of fire codes, building codes, related standards, state laws and their interpretation and enforcement practices.
  • Knowledge in building design and construction
  • Knowledge in fire protection system design, installation, and maintenance.
  • Skill in enforcing codes and standards with firmness and tact.
  • Skill in the effective and efficient management of time, scheduling of work and use of resources.
  • Skill in data entry and reporting with great attention to detail and confidentiality.
  • Skill in inter-personal relations, verbal communication and problem-solving.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records of fire inspections and other associated activities.
  • Ability to learn a variety of computer software programs used by the District.
  • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to prescribed policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a harmonious work environment with fellow employees and the general public.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate through clear and comprehensive written reports.
  • Ability to effectively interact with citizens, building owners, architects, engineers, and contractors.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associates Degree in public safety, fire protection, or related field preferred.

Licenses & Certifications Required:

  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Fire Inspector Certificate required; Intermediate Fire Inspector Certificate preferred, and
  • Maintain a Class "C" Texas vehicle driver's license.

Fire Inspector I Pay Range:

  • $24.18 - $33.33 hourly, depending on Qualifications and/or Prior Experience
  • Annual Salary Range: $50,299 - $69,327 depending on Qualifications and/or Prior Experience

Fire Inspector II

Essential Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Duties and functions include the following:

  • Schedule, coordinate and perform inspections of fire protection systems, buildings and properties to ensure compliance with the district's fire code and related standards.
  • Schedule, coordinate and perform fire and life safety inspections of licensed facilities.
  • Schedule, coordinate and participate in pre-development and/or pre-construction meetings with members of the design community.
  • Issue legal orders related to the enforcement of the fire code.
  • Resolve compliance problems with various parties through written or verbal communication.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation related to all activities.
  • Perform public education services as requested.
  • Prepare and participate in the presentation of training to various audiences.
  • Attend training classes and conferences on a variety of fire code-related topics.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of experience in performing fire/life safety inspections to verify compliance with a nationally recognized fire code or standards, and
  • Associates Degree in public safety, fire protection, or related field required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job, may be substituted for evaluation at the discretion of the District.

Licenses & Certifications Required:

  • Intermediate Fire Inspector certification from Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP), and
  • International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I and Fire Inspector II Certificates (or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment), and
  • Maintain a Class "C" Texas vehicle driver's license.

Fire Inspector II Pay Range:

  • $30.12 - $39.59 hourly, depending on Qualifications and/or Prior Experience
  • Annual Salary Range: $62,651 - $82,347, depending on Qualifications and/or Prior Experience

Fire Inspector III

Essential Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Duties and functions include the following:

  • Schedule, coordinate and perform inspections of fire protection systems, buildings and properties to ensure compliance with the district's fire code and related standards.
  • Schedule, coordinate and perform fire and life safety inspections of licensed facilities.
  • Schedule, coordinate and lead pre-development and/or pre-construction meetings with members of the design community.
  • Review site, building and other fire safety related plans to determine compliance with applicable codes.
  • Research available options, select best option, prepare the required documentation and issue legal orders related to the enforcement of the fire code.
  • Resolve compliance problems with various parties through written or verbal communication.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation related to all activities.
  • Perform public education services as requested.
  • Prepare and lead the presentation of training to various audiences.
  • Research, select, coordinate and/or attend training classes and conferences on a variety of fire code related topics.
  • Assist Inspector I and Inspector II personnel as needed.
  • Lead and manage assigned projects using resources provided to meet expected goals and outcomes.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised: This position will be responsible for the oversight and management of significant projects or programs within the Community Risk Reduction Division as directed by the Division Manager. This position may be required to act as the Division Manager in their absence.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Eight (8) years of experience in performing fire/life safety inspections to verify compliance with a nationally recognized fire code or standards, and
  • Associates Degree in public safety, fire protection, or related field; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job, may be substituted for evaluation at the discretion of the District.

Licenses & Certifications Required:

  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Intermediate Fire Inspector Certificate; Advanced Fire Inspector Certificate preferred, and
  • TCFP Plan Examiner Certificate, and
  • International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I certification, and
  • ICC Fire Inspector II certification, and
  • ICC Fire Plans Examiner and Certified Fire Marshal preferred, and
  • Maintain a Class "C" Texas vehicle driver's license.

Fire Inspector III Pay Range:

  • $33.71 - $45.50 hourly, depending on Qualifications and/or Prior Experience
  • Annual Salary Range: $70,106 - $94,633, depending on Qualifications and/or Prior Experience

For All Levels:

Physical Demands:

This job operates in a clerical office setting and mostly in a field environment including new and existing building construction. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Applicant must possess:

  • Ability and physical stamina to perform moderate to strenuous physical activity necessary to climb, stoop, and access all areas of buildings or construction sites in order to conduct inspections. Exposure to slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to occasionally perform physically demanding tasks under varying weather conditions outdoors. Exposure to marked changes in temperature/humidity, dust, fumes, smoke, gases, odors, mists, or other potentially irritating particles.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to coordinate hand-eye and eye-foot movement.
  • Ability to maintain visual acuity up close, at a distance, peripherally, in depth, and discern the full color spectrum.
  • Ability to hear adequately when working in dangerous areas.
  • Ability to operate and complete tasks wearing required personal protective equipment.

Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position of a minimum 40-hour week. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel:

Ability to commute between operational locations, within 30 miles or less, driving District assigned vehicles.
