What are the responsibilities and job description for the Swim Instructor - West Boise YMCA position at Treasure Valley Family YMCA?
Serving over 20,000 active youth, adult, and family members, the West Branch of the Treasure Valley Family YMCA helps members lead a healthier, happier life. Facility amenities and features include six fitness studios, three racquetball courts, full-court basketball gym, youth activity center, climbing wall, 50-meter swimming pool, and training pool.
The Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching swimming skills, water safety, and water survival skills to participants at a variety of levels.
Schedule and Compensation:
Key shifts to fill are Monday through Thursday evenings from 4:00pm - 7:00pm. Starting rate: $13.65 per hour.

Responsibilities:
- Build relationships with youth and parents by encouraging participants with honest, direct, and appropriate feedback.
- Create a safe environment for participants through appropriate class control, by role modeling safe behaviors, maintaining a clutter-free deck, and being on time and ready to respond quickly and appropriately.
- Implement the established curriculum that helps youth achieve the five Cause Measurement goals.
- Adapt lessons as necessary to help kids succeed.
- Engage in intentional conversation with students and parents regarding swimmer progression, retention, and placement.
- Monitor and ensure safety of participants and volunteers at assigned program areas.
Qualifications:
- Age – Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Must be able to differentiate between colors (red, yellow, blue and green).
- Must be able to engage others in conversations and make all people feel welcome.
- Ability to respond calmly and quickly to safety and emergency situations.
- Must have good interpersonal and communications skills and be sensitive, adaptable, professional, and articulate when dealing with others.
Certifications Required:
- Basic Life Support Certification
- First Aid Certification
- Oxygen Certification
- Y Swim Instructor
