Job Summary: The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) Manager manages the Summer Youth Employment program in collaboration with the SYEP Project Manager and reporting to the Career Pathways Director.  This program serves young people aged 14-21 who are experiencing barriers to their education and employment.  During the 12-week program, over 150 youth can earn and learn through hands-on experience working on outdoor construction and landscape projects.

 

Essential Functions:

Under the direction of Career Pathways Director and in collaboration with applicable Tree Trust functions, the Program Manager is accountable for:

  • SYEP program administration and curriculum planning, evaluation, development, and budget control. 
  • SYEP program staff hiring and supervision.
  • Development and performance of established procedures for participant applications, enrollment, onboarding/orientation, evaluation, training, case management, general documentation, and confidentiality in collaboration with Finance, Development, Outreach, Employment Success, Human Resources and Field Operations.
  • Reviewing, editing and approving the outline of each week's activities and worksites for Participants as received from Field Operations and Employment Success.
  • Collaborating as needed with Field Operations and Employment Success in schedule and activity coordination and ensuring all occurs as scheduled or revisions to schedule are appropriate. 
  • Being familiar with field training topics and providing field training and supervision to participants as needed or to deliver curriculum.
  • Oversight of daily database management including, but not limited to, Workforce 1 and Salesforce, through regularly reviewing reporting and close collaboration with Outreach, Employment Success, Development and other departments/staff as needed.
  • Planning and facilitating effective participant recognition events.
  • Participant’s progress towards stated program outcomes and organizational key performance indicators.
  • Participate in the grant reporting process by successful completion of the role’s essential functions and being responsible for reviewing and/or gathering additional data to ensure complete and accurate grant reports.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with county workforce representatives, employer partners, project partners, and school contacts and attend meetings with partners as requested.     

 Participant Service Requirements

  • Mentor BIPOC participants and participants with all types of employment barriers, including participants with varied ability including Autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, trauma, experience with the criminal justice system and substance abuse issues, and from underserved areas or living with low income.
  • Model a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and commitment to quality.
  • Provide deliberate and effective feedback to participants to foster continuous development within an employment training setting.
  • Set appropriate boundaries with participants, staying focused on program mission and goals.
  • Respond to challenging situations with composure and good judgement, modeling professional employment behaviors. 

Qualifications/Skills Required:

  • Ability and willingness to demonstrate Tree Trust's core values of Professional, Integrity, Commitment, Resilient and Stewardship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, business, social work, or related field and 3 years of a combination of relevant work experience listed below OR High School Diploma/GED and a minimum of 5 years of a combination of relevant work experience listed below.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based applications.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background and motor vehicle record check. Valid Minnesota driver’s license, clean driving record, and an insured vehicle for transportation to schools, community partner sites, and transportation of clients. 

Relevant Work Experience:

  • Program or project administration or coordination in a non-profit, education or business environment
  • Hiring and managing employees
  • Serving racially and ethnically diverse youth and young adults experiencing barriers to employment
  • Working comfortably with individual participants and with groups, both onsite and offsite
  • Motivating and building skills and confidence in ages 14-21
  • Employment training or teaching
  • Case management and/or employment counseling
  • Data entry and management in Workforce One, Salesforce, GPMS or similar databases 

Required Skills:

  • Ability to meet participants from diverse backgrounds where they are and build them up.
  • Ability to lead, train, and direct others in a professional setting.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with staff, youth, parents, and community members.
  • Ability to take initiative and demonstrate commitment.
  • Ability to use conflict resolution skills effectively.
  • Ability to accept and adjust to change. 

Work environment: office environment; frequent visits to outdoor and indoor participant worksites; frequent visits to community locations and events.

 

Physical demands: Lifting and carrying up to 25lbs. Reach with hands and arms. Standing or sitting for long periods of time. Significant screen viewing and keyboarding/typing time, repetitive movement of hands and fingers. Constantly required to communicate with ability to talk and hear.
