GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The EHS manager is accountable for the development and implementation of programs in the Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S) areas of manufacturing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Investigates and documents complaints with respect to adverse effects (human, environmental) stemming for personal, commercial use of products.
- Communicates standards of product use and application, ensures mutual understanding, and mitigates exposure to hazardous / undesirable conditions in the normal use of products.
- Leads the development and implementation of comprehensive regulatory compliance programs in the areas of occupational health and safety, hazardous materials management, environmental management and transportation materials safety.
- Interprets regulations, develops legislatively compliant, organizationally appropriate programs, and delivers tools, training and education to Tremco staff, managers and senior management and Tremco sister Canadian companies.
- Conducts safety and health audit programs, documents statistics with respect to EHS&S program compliance, and makes recommendations with respect to annual safety program changes and objectives.
- Represents Tremco with regulatory bodies and government agencies, and acts as primary point of contact for legal in the areas of litigation support.
- May act as expert witness in the event of investigations and legal proceedings.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge and relevant documentation with respect to EHS&S and hazardous materials management rules, regulations and legislation in multiple jurisdictions.
- Researches best practices and investigates program innovations, both broadly and with respect to chemicals manufacturing, distribution and disposal, and makes recommendations regarding policy gaps and program improvement opportunities.
- Prepares contingency plans and recommendations with respect to pending or anticipated changes in legislation, and develops proactive, cost effective program options in support of chemical product and regulatory changes.
- Serve as a resource to operations leadership teams and senior managers regarding policies, standards and best practices with respect to occupational health and safety, hazardous materials management and environmental management.
- Works closely with the Director Human Resources in the areas of workplace injury case management, claims management and back-to-work programs.
- Is responsible and leads by example the EHS&S programs, codes compliance, systems and training for the facility.
- Develops and implements enterprise-wide programs for EHS&S codes compliance, and delivers tools and training to ensure organizational compliance with regulations and best practices.
- Identifies and corrects non-code compliant processes by formal audits, and makes recommendations in order to rectify compliance issues and mitigate risk of accident / liability.
- Ensures that all employees are aware of, and that programs are in place to train and resource employees to comply with Tremco’s EHS&S procedures and protocols.
- Hires, trains, develops and evaluates employees in accordance with the policies of the organization.
- Assesses EHS&S human resources requirements in medium and long term, and prepares plans to develop and/or recruit needed talent to achieve organization objectives.
- Prepares, implements and monitors the annual program budget, and takes corrective action on budget variances.
- Provides analysis and recommendations with respect to financial implications of product, program and regulatory changes, including cost / benefit analysis of program improvements to mitigate the financial impact of EHS&S related accidents / incidents.
- Establishes regulatory guidelines and performance standards in the areas of chemical hazard identification and labeling, site sanitation and safety risk, develops evaluative criteria, and conducts ongoing audits and reporting with respect to program compliance.
- Works with corporate representatives to ensure that third party accreditations are obtained and maintained.
- Leads the investigation of all EHS&S related accidents, incidents and program breaches.
- Prepares evaluative reports and recommendations, and implements new program measures to mitigate continuing / future risk.
- Provides guidance to Unit Leaders to ensure that near and long-term operational plans are in compliance with organizational and jurisdictional EHS&S compliance requirements.
- Develops program plans to meet ongoing and developing requirements in the areas of training, audit and reporting.
- As a resource to the management teams, provide feedback to senior management regarding feasibility / advisability of business strategy from a regulatory compliance and EHS&S best practices perspective.
EDUCATION:
- 4 year College or University degree in Natural Sciences (Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or Safety Sciences)
EXPERIENCE:
- 4-10 years experience leading and contributing to compliance and regulatory policy and program development in a materials processing environment.
- Formal training in the area of occupational health and safety is a must.
- Ability to travel across North America.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Board of Certified Safety Professionals – Certified Safety Professional certificate.
OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Broad understanding of regulatory compliance requirements, risk assessment and mitigation programs in multiple (particularly North American) jurisdictions.
- Ability to inspire others to commit to and achieve EHS&S program goals and performance measures in a production environment with varying levels of literacy and educational background.
- Ability to develop a business case for new program development / program modification.
- Ability to manage program administration requirements across multiple, disparate (production, distribution, warehousing, sales and marketing) divisions.
- French is highly preferred.
- ISO 9001 and 14001 are highly preferred.
BENEFITS AND COMPENSATION:
- The Salary range for applicants in this position generally ranges between $84K and 105K. This range is an estimate, based on potential employee qualifications, operations, needs, and other considerations permitted by law.
