What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lower School Physical Education Teacher position at Trevor Day School?
The Lower School Physical Education Teacher supports students from Threes through 5th Grade in developing essential physical skills and a lifelong love of movement. Working collaboratively with Trevor’s Director of Health, Wellness & Physical Education, as well as the Lower School PE team, they design and implement a dynamic program that fosters physical fitness, body awareness, coordination, sportsmanship, teamwork, and confidence.
We seek an experienced educator who brings a multidisciplinary and multicultural approach to teaching activities, games, and sports. The ideal candidate will monitor student progress, communicate effectively through written and verbal reports, and collaborate with Lower School faculty and administration to ensure all students are supported in their growth and development.
Key Responsibilities:

Develop and implement a well-rounded physical education program focused on fundamental motor skills, body awareness and control, strength, endurance, and flexibility.

Introduce students to a variety of sports and physical activities through skills-based activities that are engaging and developmentally appropriate for students in elementary school.

Create a positive, inclusive, and engaging environment that encourages collaboration and teamwork.

Support students’ social-emotional development by fostering mindfulness, empathy, resilience, and perseverance.

Ensure the safety and proper maintenance of gym and field areas, as well as all equipment.

Supervise students during out-of-classroom activities, including field trips, arrival, and dismissal.
Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; enrollment in or completion of a master’s degree program preferred.

Previous experience working with early childhood and/or elementary-age children preferred.

Strong collaboration skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.

Enthusiasm for curriculum innovation and professional growth, with a commitment to school-wide initiatives.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Interest in coaching Middle or Upper School athletics (optional, stipended opportunities).

The full-time salary range for this position is $55,000–$176,000, as per the school's salary scale. When extending an offer for employment, Trevor Day School bases the salary upon several factors that include (but are not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education, training, key skills, and peer salary equity.
