A plumbing dig crew member is responsible for physically excavating trenches and pits at construction sites to allow for the installation and repair of underground plumbing pipes, including sewer lines and water mains, using hand tools and heavy machinery, often working under the direction of a crew leader to ensure proper pipe placement and project completion.
- Must have plumbing experience.
- Must be able to work in all weather for extended periods of time (cold, snow, rain, sunshine, heat).
- Must be able to repair and/or replace sewer and water lines.
- Preferred machine operator experience.
Job Duties:
- Excavation: Dig trenches and pits using shovels, picks, and other hand tools, as well as operate backhoes and excavators to reach required depths.
- Site Preparation: Clear debris and obstacles from the excavation area.
- Pipe Installation: Assist in laying and positioning pipes within the trenches, using guide wires and other methods to ensure proper alignment.
- Backfilling and Compaction: Backfill trenches around installed pipes with soil and compact to ensure proper support.
- Safety Measures: Adhere to all safety protocols including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), trench shoring, and traffic control.
- Material Handling: Load and unload materials such as pipes, fittings, and gravel as needed.
- Basic Maintenance: Perform basic maintenance checks on excavation equipment.
Required Skills:
- Physical Strength: Ability to perform strenuous manual labor including digging, lifting, and shoveling for extended periods.
- Hand Tool Proficiency: Skilled use of hand tools like shovels, picks, rakes, and levels.
- Basic Construction Knowledge: Understanding of construction site safety procedures and basic pipe layout principles.
- Ability to Read Plans: Interpret simple blueprints and construction plans to locate pipe locations.
- Teamwork: Collaborate effectively with other crew members to complete tasks efficiently.

- Exposure to dirt, dust, and potential hazards associated with excavation work.
- May involve working in confined spaces or trenches.
