PLC Automation Controls Engineer

Summary Description

The PLC/Automation Controls Engineer Technician will be responsible for designing, programming, troubleshooting, and maintaining PLC-based control systems and other automation systems. This role requires a strong electrical background, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced service environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential:

• Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri-M safety policies and procedures.
• Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri-M employment policies and procedures including standards of conduct and appearance to reflect positively on the Company.
• Design, program, and troubleshoot PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) systems, HMI (Human Machine Interface) panels, and other automation equipment.
• Perform diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on electrical systems to ensure optimal performance of automation systems. Collaborate with engineers, electricians, technicians, and clients to deliver high-quality automation solutions. Conduct on-site installations, commissioning and servicing of control systems.
• Develop and maintain detailed documentation, including schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
• Provide technical support and training to clients and internal teams.
• Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in automation and control systems. Communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. 
• Troubleshoot complex electrical and control system issues, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum efficiency.
• Adhere to safety standards and protocols in all aspects of work.

Job Requirements

Skills/Education:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related field.
• 2-3 years of proven experience working with PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and other automation systems (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider Electric).Strong electrical background with expertise in reading and interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with a focus on delivering timely and effective solutions.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.  Ability to effectively communicate at all levels of stakeholders.  Proven track record of exceeding expectations and delivering results. Willingness to travel to client sites as needed.
• Passion for staying current with industry advancements and a commitment to lifelong learning. Strong field skills, including the ability to work in industrial environments and handle physical tasks as required.
• Certifications in relevant automation technologies (e.g., Siemens TIA Portal, Allen-Bradley Studio 5000).
• Experience with SCADA systems and industrial networking protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus, LON, BACnet, Serial, Profibus).
• Maintain a valid driver’s license and ability to meet driving eligibility requirements as outlined in Tri-M/EnerG Test policies. 
• Must have reliable personal transportation to and from the assigned work location/office, as needed. 

Physical Requirements:

• Working a minimum of 40 hours/week.
• Sitting 6 to 8 hours/day.
• Lifting weights of 0 to 30 lbs. from floor to above shoulders.
• Repetitive use of hands for writing, typing, data entry, and filing.
• Vision adequate for computer use and reading.
• Hearing adequate for phone use.
• Standing, climbing, kneeling, reaching, bending, twisting, and walking as needed to perform site surveys to collect data for project design.
• Balance adequate for climbing ladders, scaffolds, and lifts.
• Environmental factors include working in:  temperature extremes of 0 F to 100 F up to 8 hours inside or outside; atmospheric exposure to dust, gases, fumes, odors; and poor ventilation in confined spaces.
• Special hazards include exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and explosive hazards.
• Personal protective equipment includes use of hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, gloves and hearing protection.
