What are the responsibilities and job description for the Collections Technician position at Tribal Operations?
Job Overview: Provide assistance with collections/archival processing, and exhibit development centered on the Hocokata Ti permanent collection. To include exhibit and storage monitoring in a museum environment while exercising the initiative and sound judgement to uphold the highest ethical standards of conservation and preservation. Responsibilities also include assisting with education-focused tours, workshops and public engagement. This position requires working with many different stakeholders to ensure that the space is welcoming and informative to all audiences.
Create Your Path: The Work You’ll Do:
- Processes artifacts into the SMSC collection and archive. Prepares condition report for curatorial or archival review.
- Performs inventory of artifact and archival areas on a continual basis to ensure that objects are in correct areas and their condition has been properly documented
- Ensures database information is entered correctly and updating locations as objects or archival items are moved.
- Constructs storage mounts for artifacts and archival materials to ensure that objects are properly stored according to museum best practice.
- Serves as support to collections and archival staff to ensure that items are identified and pulled for visits to those respective areas, while providing database information for researchers.
- Assists with maintenance for museum components in exhibits and work with maintenance staff to troubleshoot or order new parts for internal exhibits.
- Compiles and reviews environmental data to ensure that exhibit areas maintain appropriate temperature and humidity levels
- Assists in the development of collection finding aids using DACS (Describing Archives: A Content Standard) and other industry standards.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in art, History, Anthropology, American Indian, Museum, Curatorial studies or equivalent experience.
- Two years of work experience in a museum, art gallery or related with a concentration on collections management.
- Knowledge of Dakota Culture and Dakota history in Minnesota.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Valid Class D driver’s license may be required with a good driving record.
