Orlando area company is looking for an experienced and highly motivated personal property underwriter for its Lake Mary, FL office. The company is looking for a minimum of 5 years of experience. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- This position reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer and is responsible for the underwriting operations of the company, to include underwriting and rating new and renewal business submissions, maintenance of an adequate system of underwriting records and a comprehensive set of underwriting guidelines, authorities, and referral processes designed to select preferred risks, and ensure that underwriting performance and results comply with the overall strategy.
- The Underwriting Manager has overall responsibility for supervising the entire underwriting function including submission activity, timely service and following up on underwriting information, and monthly underwriting reports for use by Operational Managers, the Executive Team, the Board of Directors, and external users.
- Oversee daily operations of the underwriting department.
- Perform reviews of underwriting controls and operating results to identify and implement action plans that will result in improvements.
- Ensure all underwriting practices and standards adhere to all applicable state, and local regulatory requirements for underwriting compliance and reporting, as well as company and management policies and procedures.
- Determine and report company KPI’s and compare with industry standards to ensure maximizing efficiency and profitability.
- Develop, train, and lead underwriting personnel on internal guidelines, procedures, and controls that will allow them to perform their functions in a fashion that minimizes the company’s risk of loss and maximizes financial performance.
- Oversee the coordination and the preparation of internal quarterly and annual quality assurance reviews and participation with external auditors and regulatory audits.
- Timely and effective identification and analysis of impact of changes in underwriting rules or operational changes impacting the company’s financial performance.
In this role you’ll:
- Define our risk exposure appetite and strategy with group leadership and the insurance functions
- Work with the different lines of residential property business to design and implement the right underwriting guidelines and put the measures in place
- Oversee book exposure while supporting and enabling fast, profitable growth
- Lead strategic projects across business lines and work closely with Claims, Insurance Product, and Actuarial Pricing team
- Design and build an efficient, scalable, and innovative underwriting organization and take a hands-on approach to capacity building
- Bring cutting-edge technologies, new data sources and creative out-of-the-box thinking to underwriting control with a cost-effective implementation
- Maintain a strong, resilient, profitable, and competitive book of business across all our product lines
- Be highly supportive of the Sales & Production process
What you should have:
- An active state insurance 4-40 or 2-20 license.
- Strong PC skills with proficiency in Word & Excel
- Attention to detail and the ability to efficiently multi-task
- Self-Motivation with ability to thrive in a production focused Team Environment
- Commitment to excellent customer service
What you’ll need
- 5 years of personal lines insurance and underwriting experience in mid-management positions,
- A proven history of managing exposure in profitable, large books of business, across product lines, in a fast-growth, highly competitive environment
- Carrier rating experience
- Strong collaboration and communication skills with an ability to communicate complex technical issues and gain the support of diverse stakeholders
- Natural team builder: Passionate and hands-on about finding the best talent and training, developing, and mentoring them with empathy and high EQ
- Track record driving change, securing stakeholder engagement and buy-in and executing effectively and with a sense of urgency
- Bachelor's degree in business, Insurance, Finance, Economics, Statistics, or related field
