Job Overview:
The Pharmacy Automation Specialist is a vital healthcare professional responsible for supporting pharmacy operations. Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, this role oversees the implementation and maintenance of pharmacy automated medication distribution systems. Key responsibilities include monitoring processes related to automated medication distribution, evaluating compliance with procedures, and ensuring the integrity of equipment. The Pharmacy Automation Specialist fosters strong working relationships with pharmacy leadership, staff, and other hospital departments.
Job Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Active National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) required (approved certifications include PTCB and ExCPT by the National Healthcareer Association)
- Active registration with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician
- General knowledge of medications and pharmacy automated systems
- Willingness to be trained in compounding hazardous and/or non-hazardous sterile products as needed
- Up to 1 year of technical pharmacy experience as a Pharmacy Technician I
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain expertise in pharmacy systems, including automated dispensing cabinets, Codonics, CII Safe, medication packaging systems, Swisslog automation, and IV automation.
- Leverage system functionality to optimize operational workflows and medication dispensing processes.
- Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and reporting tasks for pharmacy automation systems, including inventory optimization, formulary management, and controlled substance discrepancy resolution.
- Coordinate system implementations, upgrades, and downtime procedures, ensuring smooth operation during automation-related disruptions.
- Act as a subject matter expert, providing training and guidance on pharmacy automation systems to staff and supporting inter- and intra-department education.
- Mentor new staff members and provide input on hiring, promotions, and performance evaluations.
- Ensure adherence to pharmacy policies, safety standards, and regulations (USP 797, USP 800, ASHP, NIOSH, Board of Pharmacy guidelines).
- Assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing sterile compounded products, including chemotherapy and hazardous medications, while maintaining cleanliness and following department procedures.
- Build strong relationships with customers, addressing concerns and ensuring effective communication between vendors, leadership, and staff.
