What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Patient Support Tech position at Trinity Health Michigan?
POSITION PURPOSE
Collaborates with nursing education to develop an orientation process and materials for newly
hired Patient Support Technicians. Responsible for guiding and being a resource for colleagues
through the job functions of a Patient Support Technician according to the established job
description. Being a liaison for the nursing staff. Performs direct patient care to a specific group
of patients and coordinates activities which relate to the flow of unit processes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Collaborates with the educator and/or leadership with developing and coordinating
orientation and training materials.
2. Works with management and educators to develop competencies with established
policies and procedures and that work performed meets established standards.
3. Trains new Patient Support Technicians on basic bedside care and selected procedures.
Including but not limited to: venipuncture, 12 lead EKG, basic blood glucose collection and
monitoring, respiratory care (i.e. Cough and deep breathing, incentive spirometry, pulse
oximetry, oxygen setup, hand held nebulizer), dressing changes, collection of vital signs,
recognition of life-threatening conditions with initial responses and reporting, emptying and
measuring drainage equipment.
4. Trains new Patient Support Technicians on positioning, ambulating, and transporting patients
safely. Operates and maintains equipment in a safe and appropriate manner and promptly
reports any defects/malfunctions.
5. Inspects and evaluates completed work through the training process to ensure compliance
with established policies and procedures and that work performed meets established
standards.
6. Provides guidance and instruction as needed while working with the Patient Support
Technicians.
7. Provides proper mentoring and training to all new Patient Support Technicians.
8. Works collaboratively with unit educator with ongoing unit education.
9. Actively engaging and participates in unit-based and other committees and indicatives that
promote patient and workplace safety, optimal patient’s outcomes, and satisfaction.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
- One year direct patient care work experience within the past 5 years.
- High School diploma or equivalent, preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Maintains appropriate skill level through completion of required hospital and unit based
education offerings.
2. In a typical day, the colleague may sit for 25%, stand for 25%, and walk for 50% of the day.
3. Working in the patient care environment may result in exposure to communicable diseases and
hazardous substances.
4. Working weekends and holidays is necessary to meet staffing needs. Work in other units and
shifts may be assigned as necessary to also meet staffing requirements.
5. Associate's position requires occasional (5-10% of work time) squatting, crawling, crouching,
kneeling, and balancing, frequent bending/stooping, and reaching above shoulder level,
pushing/pulling.
6. Position requires the use of hands for simple and firm grasping and fine manipulating.
7. Position may require frequent lifting and carrying of patients/equipment other not to exceed 51
pounds. Associates will not lift items/patients exceeding 35 pounds from the floor.
