Job Description:

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Trinity University (San Antonio, Texas) invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of French Studies for one academic year with a possible renewal for a second academic year. The ideal candidate will be able to teach across the French Studies curriculum, from beginner courses to advanced (upper-level) seminars, with an emphasis on cultural discoveries and language proficiency. Additionally, the candidate may teach courses in the Pathways general curriculum focusing on writing, oral and visual communication, and/or engaged citizenship. The teaching load is six courses per year (3/3) at the undergraduate level. Pending budgetary approval, the position will begin on August 11, 2025, and is outside the tenure track. Search committee will begin reviewing applications on March 10, 2025.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is the largest single department at Trinity University. It houses German, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian sections as well as the Global Latinx major, and it also offers courses in Japanese and Italian. Our faculty come from all over the world, and their research includes women’s and gender studies, social justice, Marxist studies, film studies, ecocriticism and the environmental humanities, art history, philosophy, international studies, sport studies, Jewish studies, architecture, and media studies and graphic novels. Our faculty consistently publish widely and in renowned presses and journals in both North America and in countries around the world. We are a diverse department working with communities locally in San Antonio and Texas as well as globally.

Duties And Responsibilities

Primary teaching responsibility will be within the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures in the French Studies section, which will include teaching at all levels (beginning, intermediate, and advanced) of our undergraduate French-language program. The successful applicant will be encouraged to contribute to the program’s growth and present an active research agenda in a field closely related to French Studies. Interdisciplinary approaches to French Studies (examples include, but are not limited to, Francophone culture and literature, diaspora studies, gender and sexuality, media studies, corporeality studies, environmental studies, etc.) are strongly encouraged.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required: Ph.D. or equivalent in French or French Studies by the start of the appointment, August 2025.

Experience

Required: Demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and pedagogy for both language and culture, as well as the ability to offer rigorous and creative courses for the French Studies curriculum at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, in addition to showcase the ability to Trinity’s First-Year Experience program, and cross-listed courses in English.

Preferred: Present an active research profile in French Studies or closely related fields. Interdisciplinary research is strongly encouraged. Examples include, but are not limited to, Francophone culture and literature, diaspora studies, gender and sexuality, media studies, corporeality studies, environmental studies, etc.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Be fluent (native or near-native) in both French and English; all varieties of French spoken around the globe are welcome.
