Position Overview:
The Mainframe Systems Programmer/DBA is responsible for overseeing and supporting complex database upgrade projects, modifications, installations, testing, implementations, and enhancements of both new and existing system software products. This role involves planning, installing, configuring, testing, and managing core database products and software to support the County's database architecture and business requirements. Titles within this role may include, but are not limited to, DB2 Systems Programmer/DBA, IMS Systems Programmer/DBA, and ADABAS/NATURAL Systems Programmer/DBA.
Key Responsibilities:
Database Management: Oversee and manage various database types, including hierarchical (IMS), relational (DB2), and file-based (ADABAS). Responsible for planning and upgrading database environments on a County-established basis.
Database Administration: Perform technical consulting for application and operations teams during project planning and development phases. Maintain production database systems and conduct performance reviews for existing systems utilizing DBMS software such as ADABAS, DB2, or IMS.
Database Design & Evaluation: Evaluate and select new DBMS software or fine-tune existing systems. Provide recommendations on database design and participate in the development of logical and physical database designs.
Backup, Recovery & Monitoring: Develop and implement backup and recovery procedures. Monitor database performance, space utilization, and reorganizations. Manage database replication, compression, and partitioning.
Technical Consultation: Work closely with project development teams to provide expert recommendations on database design and development.

- Proficiency with IBM Z/OS, IMS, DB2, ADABAS, SMP/E, JCL, IMS DB/DC, CICS, ACF2, ASSEMBLER/COBOL/REXX, IBM File Manager, DELTA/IMS, NATURAL/SUPERNAT, ENTIREX, CA SPOOL, IMS & DB2 BMC Tools, N20/TRIM.
Database Management & Performance: Experience with database health checks, capacity planning, performance monitoring, database reorganizations, and ensuring efficient database operations.
Experience Requirements:
A minimum of Eight(8) years of experience as a Systems Programmer/DBA, including at least three (3) years in a leadership role.
Preferred Experience:
- Five (5) years of experience in ADABAS/NATURAL systems programming in the last 8 years.
- Five (5) years of experience in IMS systems programming in the last 8 years.
- Five (5) years of experience with CICS systems programming in the last 8 years.
- Five (5) years of experience with IMS and ADABAS database administration in the last 8 years.
Educational Requirements:
- A Bachelor's degree in an IT-related or engineering field is required for this position.
