Job Summary
The Patient Financial Counselor serves as Tri-State Hospital’s primary contact for patient payments in accordance with established credit and collection policies. The Patient Financial Counselor is responsible for resolving self-pay accounts at Tri-State Hospital while maintaining strong relations with patients, guarantors, and business office departments. This individual utilizes medical billing knowledge and excellent customer service skills to effectively collect from and provide resources to patients, thereby promoting patient satisfaction and Tri-State’s financial solvency. All communications are conducted in a manner that will result in positive patient relations and prompt payment for services. May work under stressful circumstances at times. Must meet established attendance standards and adhere to hospital/department dress code, including wearing ID badge.
Skills and Abilities:
- Familiarity with statutes and regulations that impact collection of past-due accounts.
- Broad knowledge of government assistance programs, guidelines, and application procedures.
- Proven working knowledge of Revenue Cycle workflow, medical terminology, facility and professional billing processes and reimbursement.
- Ability to communicate and respond to inquiries.
- Ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
- Proficiency in examining documents for accuracy and completeness.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
- Ability to communicate face to face and via telephone with patients, families, physicians and co-workers.
Education and Training:
- High School diploma or GED required.
Experience:
- Minimum of two years appropriate work experience that would indicate a high level of communication skills and organizational ability. Previous credit/collection and healthcare facility experience preferred.
