Job Title: Staff, Design Engineer - Automation
Position Summary: This non-managerial role combines hands-on design and leadership responsibilities. You will drive strategy, execution, and development of manufacturing automation system design, leveraging your strong background in robotics, mechatronics, and manufacturing automation. Partner with a small team of engineers to understand current manufacturing processes and develop creative custom strategies to improve yields and throughput for complex flexible endoscopes.
The ideal candidate will excel in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and display the ability to perform the following key responsibilities:
- Invent, design, build, test, and iterate complex electro-mechanical automation tools to address manufacturing challenges in a startup environment.
- Develop manufacturing automation methods and custom electro-mechanical equipment that are characterized, repeatable, and produce high-yielding products across various processes.
- Create and maintain Solidworks CAD models for new designs, define specifications, and create detailed drawings per good GD&T.
- Design and implement custom algorithms to control coordinated robotic automation steps using OTS stepper motors and PLC control systems.
- Lead/participate in technical design reviews, presenting design inputs, outputs, and open issues.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to balance immediate needs while progressing toward future automation goals at a rapid pace.
- Work with design and manufacturing engineers and leadership to create an automation roadmap for various stages of the manufacturing process.
Requirements:
- B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical or Electromechanical Engineering with 8 years of experience. Related degrees are acceptable if you can demonstrate competence in mechanical and electromechanical design.
- Demonstrated experience in manufacturing, specifically braiding, coiling, coextrusion, insert molding, ultrasonics, laminating, heat staking, die bonding, welding, laser joining, and cutting.
- Proven experience designing and building electromechanical and mechanical mechanisms and assemblies.
- Experience working with off-the-shelf stepper motors and PLC control to perform coordinated closed-loop control on multi-degree-of-freedom systems.
- Experience with robotics and designing for manufacturing automation.
- Demonstrated experience taking manufacturing assemblies from skilled craftsmanship to automated manufacturing through definition, procurement, design, and installation of automation equipment.
