TITLE: Staff Vision Engineer
POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a Staff Vision Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role will be pivotal in setting requirements, verifying, and validating our next-generation ultra-miniature real-time low-latency video cameras, fiber-optic illumination, displays, and surgical image quality for our breakthrough medical robots. This person will set requirements for and test optical systems in collaboration with other engineering teams, interface with clinical engineers and visiting physicians to assure clinical needs are met, and drive through to completion of design verification.
The ideal candidate will act with passion and intensity in a medical device start-up that is fast paced and collaborative and display the ability to perform to the requirements outlined below. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Our job titles may span more than one career level. The starting base salary for this role is between $185,000 and $220,000 depending on experience. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: education, training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for equity, benefits and 401(K) with matching.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Take ownership of Vision system testing to support manufacturing, 510k approvals, clinical trials, and other programs requiring testing.
- Manage Vision system requirements definition and maintenance in collaboration with domain experts on the Vision team and other groups within Neptune.
- As needed, be prepared to follow root cause to suppliers, and assist in developing testing and other mitigations at suppliers (shared responsibility with design engineers).
- Contribute to assessment and documentation of safety risks, failure analyses, and mitigations in collaboration with domain experts on the Vision team and other groups within Neptune.
- Test competitive endoscopy vision systems to benchmark for requirements setting.
- Develop testing regime for new virtual chromoendoscopy capability, in collaboration with domain experts on the Vision team.
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Optics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field.
- 8 years of experience
- Experience integrating and testing miniature optical and mechanical components, fully built optical modules, and cameras for illumination and imaging applications.
- Proficient in standard image quality metrics like AF test targets, MTF, depth of field, field of view, luminance vs. color, color accuracy, and stray-light testing.
- Proficient using Imatest or equivalent tool for image analysis.
- Experience designing fixtures and tooling for optical tests.
- Experience with Python scripting, ideally including tools for image-processing for image-quality verification.
- Proficient in Zemax or equivalent, as well as photometry theory and practice.
- Experience with medical device engineering and medical design controls, including creating and documenting test procedures for high-compliance fields like medical, avionics, automotive, or semiconductors.
- Awareness of the effects of camera-control techniques including autoexposure and white balance, and image enhancement techniques like tone-mapping, sharpening, and denoising.
