Principal - Alternative High School

 

Purpose Statement

The Alternative High School Principal manages school administrative functions; develops and manages school budgets; implements policies, procedures; directs building-level curriculum and instruction; monitors student performance; establishes and fosters a positive learning environment; communicates with personnel, students and parents; represents the school within community forums; and supervises personnel.

This Job reports to Assigned Supervisor

Essential Functions

  • Manages school administrative functions for student discipline and MTSS program as it relates to behavior for the purpose of maintaining safe and efficient school operations within district

 

  • Monitors student performance utilizing objective and verifiable data for the purpose of analyzing and assessing effective educational strategies resulting in areas of student growth, determining areas and methods for improvement, and/or identifying opportunities to enhance professional development.

 

  • Chairs meetings (e.g. curriculum, safety, site advisory, ) for the purpose of coordinating activities and ensuring outcomes achieve school, district and/or state objectives.

 

  • Develops and manages the school budget for the purpose of maintaining programs within budget limits and accurately reporting fiscal information.

 

  • Establishes the implementation of professional development for the purpose of providing instructional staff with professional growth to impact student learning.

 

  • Facilitates communication between personnel, students, law enforcement, and/or parents for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving issues, developing interventions, and/or resolving

 

  • Implements policies, procedures, safety measures, and/or processes for the purpose of providing a safe working and learning environment and/or complying with mandated requirements.

 

  • Intervenes in occurrences of inappropriate behavior of students for the purpose of assisting students in modifying such behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills.

 

  • Manages school administrative functions (e.g. maintenance, safety, staffing, ) for the purpose of maintaining clean, safe, and efficient school operations within budget and district guidelines.

 

  • Oversees the deployment and distribution of district curriculum, instruction, and assessment for the purpose of increasing student achievement and meeting objectives.

 

  • Oversees school level personnel hiring of certified and classified staff in cooperation with district Human Resources staff for the purpose of ensuring qualified candidates fill roles within the school.

 

  • Participates in, or facilitates, committees, workshops, and trainings (e.g. personnel actions, Board meetings, professional development, etc.) for the purpose of identifying issues, developing recommendations, supporting staff, conveying and/or gathering information, and serving as a school

 

  • Prepares a wide variety of materials (e.g. reports, threat assessments, schedules, surveys, ) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.

 

  • Represents the school within community forums for the purpose of maintaining ongoing community support for educational goals, and/or assisting with issues related to the school environment.

 

  • Researches current trends in curriculum, instruction, and assessment for the purpose of maintaining current knowledge and enhancing student achievement.

 

  • Supervises personnel for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing for professional growth, and achieving overall objectives of school's curriculum.

 

Other Functions

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

 

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: planning and managing projects; using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; administering personnel policies; analyzing data; applying curriculum and instructional techniques; classifying data and/or information; comparing results; conducting meetings; counseling and mentoring employees; critical observation; enforcing rules and regulations; estimating required resources; and investigating issues.

KNOWLEDGE is required to review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws including special education laws; conflict resolution; data analysis; budgeting and accounting principles; curriculum and instruction; concepts of management and supervision; stages of child development; grammar, spelling and punctuation; knowledge of community resources; practices of personnel administration; principles of negotiation/arbitration; and school safety and security practices.

ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with frequent interruptions; creating a positive school climate for students, staff and community; motivating staff; mediating and resolving issue; and adapting to changing work priorities.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational policies to achieve organizational objectives; managing major organizational components; supervising the use of funds. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 85% sitting, 10% walking, 5% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

 

Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field with increasing levels of responsibility is required in public education teaching with multiple, consecutive years of experience including administrative roles, preferably at the secondary level working with high needs students.
Education (Preferred): Successful completion of a Principal Licensure program; valid Wyoming Principal License required.

Education: Masters degree in job-related area with an emphasis in public education.
