Position: Battalion Chief
Department: Fire
Salary: $68,664.96/Yr
Under general supervision and instruction this position is responsible for directing the operations of an assigned battalion, and over Volunteer Firefighter Operations.
Qualifications/Knowledge:
- High school diploma or GED, current valid driver's license and ability to obtain the license issued for the type of vehicle or equipment operated; Associates Degree preferred
- Must have one year experience as a Lieutenant/EMT
- Must be a Certified Firefighter and EMT-I or above
- Possession of NPQ Fire Officer II Certification
- Possession of NPQ Hazardous Materials Technician Certification
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to meet current requirements set forth by National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act
- Knowledge of fire prevention, suppression and investigation standards, practices, strategies, tactics and apparatus
- Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards
- Knowledge of training and certification requirements for department personnel
- Knowledge of local, state and federal fire codes, local ordinances and departmental rules and regulations
- Skill in management and supervision under both routine and emergency situations
- Skill in decision making and problem solving
- Skill in reading maps and blueprints
- Skill in the operation and use of fire equipment and apparatus
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervises, directs and evaluates assigned staff; develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage; compiles and reviews timesheets; approves and processes employee concerns and problems; assists with or completes employee performance appraisals; trains staff in operations, policies and procedures; these duties are performed while on shift or off shift as necessary
- Inspects stations, grounds, tools and equipment; directs maintenance activities; ensures equipment and personnel are in a state of readiness; conducts safety inspections of department facilities
- Performs incident command functions at fire and emergency scenes; assumes command until relieved by superior officer; assesses conditions and determines strategy and techniques; coordinates medical response
- Operates fire apparatus and other equipment and vehicles in response to emergency incidents
- Ensures compliance with relevant codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures
- Reviews incident and accident reports and investigates as needed
- Reviews reports completed by subordinate personnel for accuracy and completeness
- Completes a variety of regular and special reports
- Maintains personnel records including payroll records
- Performs all other related duties as assigned
