What are the responsibilities and job description for the Forester position at TROUT MOUNTAIN FORESTRY, LLC?
Trout Mountain Forestry is a consulting forestry firm specializing in long-term, conservation-based forest management. Our clients include family forest owners, municipal watersheds, land trusts, and youth camps located throughout western Oregon and Southwest Washington. We maintain offices in Portland and Corvallis for our five Foresters and one Office Manager.
We are seeking a Forester to assist in a range of tasks related to harvest management, inventory and mapping, and reforestation and restoration activities on client lands.
This position will be based out of our Portland office. Most field work will be located outside of the Portland Metro area – primarily Washington, Columbia, Clackamas, and Yamhill Counties.
This position is open to both entry level and experienced Foresters. We are looking for someone with the potential to be a successful consulting forester and long-term part of our team.
Tasks and responsibilities include:
● Harvest unit layout, including tree marking and boundary flagging
● Assist in road monitoring and maintenance
● Assist in supervision of contract crews (chainsaw/tree planting/herbicide applications)
● Timber cruising
● Field data collection and basic mapping
● Herbicide application for targeted weed control and small-scale release treatments
● Riparian area buffer flagging, permitting, and communications with Oregon Department of Forestry
● Other tasks related to forest management as may be required
Candidates must possess the following qualifications:
● Undergraduate degree in Forestry or closely related field
● Experience around timber harvesting or a strong desire to learn
● Commitment to innovative forest management
● Strong work ethic and good attitude
● Enjoy physically challenging work
● Strong written and verbal communication skills
● Knowledge of Oregon forest types and tree species
● Ability to problem-solve and work independently
In addition, these qualifications are preferred:
● 2 years or more field forestry experience
● Experience in a consulting forestry environment
● Desire to build a career as a consulting forester as part of our team
● Familiarity with ArcGIS software and field data collection using handheld devices
● Basic chainsaw training/experience
● Willingness to become an Oregon Licensed Pesticide Applicator
Frequent or daily driving to client lands, including travel on gravel or dirt logging roads, will be required. The candidate will be required to provide their own vehicle initially with mileage reimbursed by the company; a company truck will be provided after a trial period. The position will require the ability to work in variable weather conditions, independently, at remote locations, and on difficult and potentially hazardous terrain.
