SUMMARY To further the mission of Camp Newaygo by overseeing the maintenance, renovation, and improvement of all camp facilities, buildings, and grounds. This role is responsible for managing large-scale construction projects, conducting structural repairs, and maintaining essential infrastructure, including plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems. The Facilities Director ensures that all areas of Camp Newaygo remain safe, functional, and ready for use by guests, staff, and program participants. Additionally, this role involves supervising maintenance staff, coordinating subcontractors, and assisting with event and program needs as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
- Perform general contracting tasks for new construction, renovations, and repairs, including but not limited to framing, cabinetry, electrical work, plumbing, and excavation.
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of camp infrastructure, including kitchens, restrooms, lodging facilities, staff housing, vehicles, golf carts, and equipment.
- Perform routine general maintenance tasks across camp facilities, ensuring timely repairs and upkeep.
- Assess structural needs and develop plans for facility improvements, ensuring compliance with building codes and safety standards.
- Obtain bids and manage subcontractors for projects outside personal expertise, ensuring quality workmanship and cost-effectiveness.
- Provide knowledgeable cost estimates for repairs, renovations, and new construction projects.
- Conduct routine inspections of camp buildings and grounds, identifying and addressing maintenance concerns proactively.
- Manage the opening and closing of camp facilities each season, including dock installation/removal, winterizing and de-winterizing water lines, and preparing buildings for seasonal use.
- Maintain all maintenance equipment, tools, and vehicles, including tractors, ensuring proper storage, upkeep, and safe operation.
- Oversee the inventory and procurement of maintenance supplies, ensuring necessary tools, equipment, and materials are stocked and available.
- Lead and supervise maintenance and grounds staff, ensuring efficient task completion and adherence to safety protocols.
- Manage volunteers assigned to facilities work, providing training and oversight.
- Assist with facility preparation for events, including setup, takedown, and maintenance support during programs.
- Work collaboratively with Camp Newaygo and TrueNorth staff, volunteers, and community partners to support the organization’s mission.
- Maintain detailed records of maintenance projects, repairs, and facility needs, providing reports as required.
- Be available on-call for after-hours and weekend emergency maintenance issues.
- Ensure camp roads, pathways, and access points remain safe and navigable year-round, including snow plowing and ice removal as needed.
- Maintain HVAC, well water systems, generator, and fire suppression systems as needed, coordinating professional servicing when required.
- Ensure the upkeep of camp grounds by supporting groundskeeping efforts as needed, including mowing, raking, snow plowing, leaf removal, and trail maintenance.
- Provide oversight and support for custodial tasks as needed to maintain clean and guest-ready buildings, restrooms, and common areas.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Program Support and Leadership:
- Serve as an agency ambassador promoting the programs & services of the TrueNorth in the community as appropriate
- Model, teach & uphold the Camp Newaygo code of conduct and protect the well-being of campers
- Maintain necessary records and complete requested forms & reports
- Participate in year-round planning for camp
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES The Facilities Director is responsible for supervising hourly and seasonal maintenance staff, as well as volunteers assigned to facilities tasks. This role includes overseeing daily operations, ensuring efficient task completion, and upholding safety and quality standards.
Supervisory responsibilities include:
- Hiring, training, and providing hands-on guidance to employees and volunteers.
- Planning, assigning, and directing work based on facility needs and seasonal demands.
- Monitoring and evaluating staff performance, offering feedback, coaching, and development opportunities.
- Recognizing and rewarding employee contributions while addressing performance concerns as needed.
- Enforcing policies and procedures in accordance with TrueNorth’s standards and applicable laws.
- Addressing complaints, resolving conflicts, and ensuring a positive, productive work environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 21 years of age.
- Ability to pass a background check and driver’s record check.
- Hold a General Contractor’s license or have equivalent on-the-job experience as a subcontractor, preferably in construction, renovations, or facility maintenance.
- Extensive experience in facility maintenance, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general repair work.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining maintenance equipment, including tractors, chainsaws, power tools, and fleet vehicles.
- Experience managing large-scale renovation and construction projects, including obtaining bids and working with subcontractors.
- Strong knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and best practices for facility upkeep.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs or more, work in various weather conditions, and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Proven leadership experience supervising maintenance teams, seasonal staff, and volunteers.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Availability for on-call responsibilities, including emergency maintenance needs on weekends and evenings.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with camp leadership, program staff, and external partners.
- Experience with inventory management and procurement of maintenance supplies and equipment.
- Knowledge of septic, HVAC, and well water systems, or willingness to learn.
- CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain (preferred).

Travel to other locations may be required on occasion. This position will require working in heat, cold, snow, rain, wind, and other natural conditions. Essential job responsibilities will be performed inside and outside, as well during daylight and at nighttime.
TRAVEL Most travel for this position will be local (within 50 miles); occasional further travel may be required for educational conferences or training. Travel in a TrueNorth Vehicle or reimbursement will be provided for all work related travel.
