We are an academic medical center, serving as the primary teaching institution for the UMKC Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, and Pharmacy.Job Description Job Duties and Responsibilities : Responsible for the defense of claims and suits against UH, UHP, and their workforce members, including discovery, negotiation of settlements, summary dispositions, and trial, under contract with the Truman Medical Centers Professional and General Liability Self-Insurance Trust (“Trust”).In service to the Trust, responds to requests for legal advice to avoid or resolve disputes. Provides counsel to physicians, hospital employees, and others as indicated, to avoid harm and disputes. Initiates or reviews medical / legal policies, procedures, and practices as necessary to achieve these objectives in collaboration with the Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel.On call by cellular phone or otherwise available to respond to urgent healthcare provider questions about legal, ethical, or other matters.Works closely with outside counsel in managing written discovery, pleadings, depositions, and settlement negotiations for cases covered by non-Trust insurance. Supervises the cost and quality of outside legal counsel.Supervises Associate Chief Litigation Counsel, legal assistant and / or litigation paralegal. Offers consultation and assistance to the Office of General Counsel, particularly as to litigation and patient safety.Provides input to Chief Legal Officer & General Counsel regarding insurance information, loss run statistics, auditor requests, and other data pertinent to evaluation of the Trust.Manages the budget of the Trust through oversight of expenses incurred in case and claim management.Administers the Trust Management Committee, including all requirements included in the Trust Bylaws and Coverage documents.Ensures excellent customer service for all insureds under the Trust, patients, other UH employees and medical staff members.Promotes quality improvement, staff and patient safety, and cultural diversity through department operations.Presents a courteous and helpful demeanor to all patients, visitors, and staff members.Maintains current knowledge related to applicable statutes, regulations, guidelines, and standards necessary to perform job duties in accordance with the requirements of the Corporate Compliance Plan.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Attorney licensed in the state of Missouri and in Federal Court.Ten years of experience in malpractice litigation.Competently serve as first-chair trial attorney in defense of complex, multi-million dollar medical malpractice cases.Exercise outstanding judgment on legal matters.#J-18808-Ljbffr
