Academic Advisor - Pre-Health Professions
Job Responsibilities
The Pre-Health Professions Academic Advisor plays a vital role in guiding and supporting incoming freshmen who have expressed an interest in pursuing careers in healthcare. This position provides comprehensive academic advising, helping students explore pre-health pathways, understand prerequisite coursework, and develop personalized plans for success. This position reports directly to the Director of Student Success in the Center for Academic Excellence. Key Duties
- Maintain a primary advising load of approximately 200 new freshmen.
- Provide individualized guidance to students on course selections and long-term academic planning, including student registration, connecting students to campus resources, and introducing students to profession-based experiences to support the selected major.
- Counsel students about campus resources, co-curricular activities, and resources necessary to support students’ professional and personal interests.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions, including in-person, phone, and virtual visits.
- Provide holistic support for all students, including primary advisees, walk-ins, and prospective Truman students.
- Participate in campus-wide student success and recruitment initiatives, including Truman Experience Weekend, Summer Orientation, and Admitted Student Event.
- Serve as a Bounce Back Coach to students in the Bounce Back Program, providing weekly coaching sessions to address student needs and barriers to success.
- Serve on appropriate committees and represent department at campus-wide events, and participate in ongoing professional development
Pre-Health Professions Specialty Area
- Continue to advise students interested in the pre-health professions past their freshmen year in a co-advising capacity alongside a faculty advisor.
- Collaborate with the Director of Student Success, other CAE Team members, faculty with a pre-health specialty, and student organizations on issues related to pre-health professions support and student success.
- Teach a 2-credit Professional Development course on exam prep strategies and application materials for graduate pre-health programs.
- Organize and lead workshops and informational sessions on topics related to medical school and pre-health preparation and the medical profession.
- Maintain a database of pre-health professions students to determine effectiveness of pre-health professions interventions and student outcomes. Utilize data provided by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and other organizations.
- Participate as an active member of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP).
- Coordinate the Still Scholars Early Acceptance Program application process for Truman students in collaboration with ATSU.
Skills You Will Develop
- Technology: Advisors use multiple platforms, including TruView (our student portal) and Ellucian products such as Banner and Degree Works. The ability and desire to learn and successfully use multiple platforms is necessary.
- Theory and Practice of Academic Advising: Academic advisors engage in continual learning and professional development to support students with best practices. A set of core competencies will guide a holistic approach to student support, including Wellness, Identity Development, Access, and Career Development.
- Curriculum and University Requirements: Academic advisors teach students about the curricular requirements, as well as recommend co-curricular opportunities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Significant undergraduate coursework in health science, biological, physical science, or related field.
- Strong ability to work independently.
- Intellectual curiosity.
- Ability to work collegially and independently.
- Excellent written, oral, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree.
- Experience working with college students in an advising capacity.
- Experience in academic advising or in student developmental counseling.
- Experience in the health professions or related field.

Salary
The starting annual salary range for this position is $36,500-$38,000 commensurate with experience.
