Boiler Plant Operator (Swing Shift)
Job Responsibilities
This position reports directly to the Boiler Plant Foreman and is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the central steam plant boilers, integral steam and feedwater piping and equipment, and other integral plant systems and equipment, including natural gas, fuel oil, and compressed air systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform continuous surveillance of pressure boilers and associated equipment throughout the shift to ensure proper operation.
- Make periodic checks of all equipment.
- Observe various gauges, meters, and other instrumentation devices to determine the proper water, steam, air pressure, flow rates, levels, and temperatures are maintained.
- Adjust valves and controls as necessary to attain desired results.
- Record critical measurements hourly or at other designated intervals.
- Observe fuel feeding mechanisms so desired combustion level is being maintained.
- Test boiler water for proper chemical level and treat accordingly.
- Blow down water columns, water glasses, and mud drums.
- Clean equipment and working areas in the vicinity of the boilers.
- Perform equipment repair and major maintenance.
- Oil/grease motors, compressors, pumps, and equipment.
- Wash, sweep, clean, mop, and paint boiler room equipment and perform preventative maintenance on the boilers.
- Perform routine maintenance on components of cooling and heating equipment.
- Maintain orderly storage of tools, materials, and equipment.
- Clean shop areas as needed.
- Be available for overtime work as necessary.
- Assume all other reasonable duties and and responsibilities as assigned by the Boiler Plant Foreman and System Trades Supervisor, including some maintenance duties outside of specialty.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Must have the ability to read and understand product instructions, cautions, and work safety procedures.
- Must have the ability to read gauges and other information displays.
- Must have the ability to use hand and power tools.
- Must have the ability to lift 80-lbs.
- Must have the ability to climb ladders and work from elevated platforms.
- Must have the ability to understand and follow instructions given by the foreman and supervisor.
- Must have the ability to communicate using a telephone and portable radio.
PERSONAL INTERACTION
Daily contact is required with the plant foreman concerning scheduled and unscheduled activities. Daily interaction is required with coworkers. Frequent contact is required with faculty, students, and staff who use campus facilities.

Required Qualifications
For entry-level candidates: Work history showing dependability and strong work ethic required.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior professional boiler operation work experience or complex mechanical system work experience preferred.

Salary
The starting wage for this position is $18.69 hourly.
