Position Title
McNair Programming Specialist

Job Responsibilities
The McNair Programming Specialist performs a variety of recruitment, programming, and administrative duties to assist in the daily operation of the program and the provision of services to students. Supervised by the McNair Project Director, the Programming Specialist plans and coordinates all recruitment, outreach and programming activities during the academic year and summer. This includes identifying and connecting with McNair-eligible undergraduates from Truman’s population of first-generation and income-eligible students as well as students from populations underrepresented in graduate education; engaging participants in academic year and summer services and activities designed to meet McNair Program objectives; and supervising Truman student staff who work for the Program. This is a year-round, grant-funded position.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead program outreach and recruitment
  • Work closely with the Director to coordinate the identification, recruitment, and selection of eligible students.
  • Execute the program’s annual outreach and recruitment plan, which includes facilitating the Explore McNair Program for first-year students, maintaining the program’s website and social media platforms, and coordinating the annual application review process.
  • Supervise student staff who assist with recruitment events, Explore McNair Program activities, and publicize program activities on various social media platforms.
Provide academic support and deliver program services to program participants
  • Plan and deliver a curriculum of seminars, events, and activities designed to support students as they prepare for graduation and graduate school application, facilitating workshops on topics such as graduate school preparation, financial education, Scholar self-assessment, and success in higher education .
  • Help Scholars develop financial literacy, improve academic skills, apply to graduate school and build self-awareness through workshops and individual meetings to support the achievement of their graduate school goals.
  • Monitor Scholar’s academic progress toward timely degree completion, holding monthly, individual academic progress-tracking meetings with each Scholar.
  • Plan Scholar travel to prospective graduate schools and research conferences (sometimes accompanying Scholars during group travel).
  • Complete relevant purchases related to programming and maintain accurate budget records in compliance with federal regulations and Truman policies.
  • Document service delivery to students in program database, referring students to campus partners for assistance and support when appropriate.
Assist Director with program planning, promotion, and administration
  • Supervise and lead student workers and in creating promotional materials; maintaining the website; and developing an active social media presence across multiple platforms.
  • Co-teach INDV 400: Graduate School Preparation course each Spring
  • Identify relevant institutional and national data on student engagement and success to inform program curriculum decisions.
  • Maintain relationships with program alumni to help document outcomes for federal reporting and build a support network for existing Scholars.
  • Engage actively with professional organizations, TRIO trainings, campus committees, and other offices and organizations to keep abreast of relevant issues, best practices, and promote program visibility.
  • Maintain compliance with all federal regulations and Truman policies governing the documentation of services, confidentiality of records, and expenditures of grant funds.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience in areas of increased responsibility in higher education student advising, engagement, teaching, or related areas.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills to effectively engage and collaborate with students, staff, faculty and external stakeholders.
  • Ability and desire to foster a supportive and motivating environment that empowers students to reach their goals.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling, or related field.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Experience organizing workshops, seminars, or academic support services aimed at student development and success.
  • Experience in executing outreach campaigns or organizing recruitment events, including the use of social media and other platforms.
  • A strong desire for continuous learning and the ability to proactively seek out new knowledge and insights.
  • Experience working with TRIO-eligible students from diverse backgrounds, especially regarding the opportunities and barriers they navigate in higher education.
  • Familiarity with federal regulations related to grant-funded programs, higher education compliance, and student confidentiality.

Salary
The salary for this position ranges from $38,000-40,000 annually commensurate with qualifications and experience.
