What are the responsibilities and job description for the CONTROLLER position at Trust for Governors Island?
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Controller is responsible for the Trust’s accounting functions and plays a critical role in the day-to-day operations of the Finance Department, working closely with the Chief Financial Officer. The Controller has both managerial and transactional responsibilities, as follows.
- Maintain and enforce accounting policies and procedures, as well as the chart of accounts and accounting filing system, in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
- Oversee accounting department operations and process transactions including :
- Accounts payable
- Accounts receivable
- Payroll, retirement plan contributions, and union employee benefits payments
- Banking transactions and bank reconciliations
- Journal entries
- Monthly reporting, such as outstanding receivables, prepaid expenses and depreciation; quarterly financial close
- Budget and expense reporting to the CEO and senior staff
- Manage the annual audit and provision of information to external auditors as well as preparation of the Trust’s financial statements and Form 990 filing.
The Controller will also be responsible for compliance with reporting requirements for local, state, and federal government funds as well as private grants. This includes reporting requirements of New York’s Public Authorities Reform Act (“PARA”).
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education :
Bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities :
Salary : $125-$135k per year, commensurate with experience.

Location and Schedule : All positions are located on Governors Island. This position is in-person, four days a week with one day remote work.
