Description
The Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing evidence-based, comprehensive breastfeeding education, counseling, and support services for mothers, babies, and families. This position is responsible for providing guidance and support to healthcare providers, new parents, and families in the promotion of breastfeeding, as well as the implementation of breastfeeding-friendly practices. Requirements
Lactation Consultant Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group lactation support services, including lactation education, and follow-up phone and email support
- Assess and document maternal and infant health and breastfeeding goals
- Provide breastfeeding education and counseling
- Identify and refer clients to appropriate community resources
- Develop and maintain breastfeeding practices
Lactation Consultant Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing, health education, or related field
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice preferred
- IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) certification
- Three to five years of clinical experience in lactation or breastfeeding consulting
- Knowledge of current breastfeeding research and evidence-based practice
- Excellent teaching, communication, and counseling skills
- Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills
- Able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Proficient in the use of computers and related software applications
