Job Summary
This seasonal, part-time position is responsible for leading the Thayer Academy Boys Varsity Basketball program. This includes promoting a culture and practice of excellence and sportsmanship consistent with the philosophy and policies of Thayer Academy and the program’s long history of achievement. The head coach is responsible for all aspects of the program including student recruitment, managing practices and games/championships, supervising assistant coaches, communicating with families and the Thayer Athletic Department, and supporting student-athletes in the college recruitment process.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Partner with Admissions in support of student-athlete recruitment and retention; assist student-athletes and their families with the college recruitment process

Supervise, develop, and execute effective practices, prepare athletes for competition, and support meaningful skills building and growth among all players

Instruct players on the rules and fundamentals of high school boys' basketball competition

Maintain athletic rosters and manage attendance

Attend all Thayer Academy Seasonal Coaches’ Meetings, ISL and NEPSAC Meetings as designated by sport

Provide timely game reports immediately following a contest

Travel with the team on school-provided transportation

Follow all safety practices and Thayer Academy policies as outlined in the Student Handbook and Coaches’ Handbook, including the policies against hazing and bullying

Support a program culture of respect, inclusion, belonging, and exceptional sportsmanship

Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Qualifications and Skills

Substantial coaching and/or college/professional playing experience
-
Detailed understanding of the rules of high school boys' basketball

History and practice of exemplary sportsmanship and role modeling appropriate behavior with student-athletes

Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills including a cooperative, professional, and collaborative work ethic

Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
Physical Demands

Occasional lifting and moving equipment, bending, jumping, and shooting basketballs

Frequent talking, listening, walking, sitting, standing, and movement on the court

Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks and function in a fast-paced working environment
Work Environment

The Athletics facility is a busy work environment in which there is a significant amount of personal interaction

The Coach must be flexible, enthusiastic, hard-working, and responsible

Memorial Gymnasium and Alumni Gym are the main practice facilities but also include the Thayer Sports Center. Must be able to adapt to different playing surfaces in each location.

Must have a valid driver’s license
