JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE OF JOB: Principal
QUALIFICATIONS: Possess or be immediately eligible for a New Mexico Administrative License.
Applicants must be motivated and competent at verbal and written communications; demonstrate a high degree of staff and public relations; exhibit leadership in curriculum and instruction; and possess a strong background in discipline.
Administrative experience, preferred.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
JOB GOAL: By use of leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills, be an effective instructional leader at the assigned school and promote the educational development of all students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Instructional Leadership-promote the success of all students by maintaining a culture that supports achievement, high-quality instruction and professional development to meet the diverse learning needs of the school community.
- Explain and utilize educational data in a formative manner throughout the school year.
- Possess a clear understanding of and use educational data in a measurable and flexible cycle of improvement in the instructional delivery of the standards and curriculum in the district and school.
- Take initiative to develop and encourage school communication.
- Use written and oral communication that is clear, articulate and understandable.
- Take part in school communication and demonstrate leadership conducive to open and communicative school culture.
- Collaborate with teacher to create a focused Professional Development Plan (PDP) based upon school and teacher goals that include focused, relevant PD.
- Scope of Responsibility in Secondary Schools—develop, support, encourage and supervise programs that lead to increased student attendance, achievement and graduation rates resulting in college readiness and work skills to meet the diverse needs of the school community.
- Attend most school functions, encourage students and provide support for academic organizations, extracurricular activities and athletics.
- Evaluate the performance of school employees and develop professional development plans or job improvement plans to assist school employees to improve. Assist in the screening, hiring, training, and assigning, and evaluation of all personnel assigned to the school.
- Assist in supervising the development, revision, monitoring, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum and educational programs delivered in classrooms at the school.
- Supervise the preparation of all school reports and records for the school and the district office.
- Assume responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board policies and regulations by the school's staff and students.
- Assume responsibility for the safety and administration of the school plan as well as the attendance, conduct, and health of students; plan and supervise fire drills and an emergency preparedness program.
- Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline as necessary, according due process to the rights of students in accordance with established Board policy.
- Act as a liaison between the school and parents as well as community, interpret policies of the school and encourage parent and community participation in school activities.
- Assist in the management and preparation of the school’s budget.
- Manage school time to provide optimal classroom instruction and school business.
- Delegate to effective personnel the responsibility of the school in the absence of the principal.
- Ensure substitutes are in place when needs arise.
- Attend state conferences, district in-service trainings, BOE meetings, administrative meetings and others as requested.
- Assist as necessary with supervision of the school's extracurricular programs.
- Communicate and display courteous and professional behavior toward students, the public, the Immediate Supervisor, School and District Administrators, staff and peers.
- Safeguard the confidentiality of information pursuant to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and other applicable state and federal statute.
- Communicate with the Superintendent (or designee) regularly about the needs, successes and general operation of the school.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- The employee is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
- The employee must lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary is established by salary schedule.
