JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE OF JOB: School Nurse

QUALIFICATIONS: Registered Nurse (RN) licensure, (current).

Possess, or eligible to apply for valid/current New Mexico School Nurse license.

If RN: AA or Bachelor’s Degree based upon a four-year curriculum in an accredited college, or a graduate of an accredited associate degree nursing program.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal(s)

JOB GOAL: Develops and utilizes appropriate health services and health monitoring programs while functioning as a student advocate and provides for the health and wellness of students and staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

• Identify health problems that may interfere with learning through screening procedures, assessment, and evaluation of students.

• Make appropriate referrals based on data obtained from assessment and screening procedures.

• Maintain health and immunization records in accordance with regulations of State of New Mexico. Oversees compliance with state immunization laws.

• Arranges for routine care, emergency care, and first aid for all ill and injured students and employees.

• Participates as a health professional in the evaluation process for students referred for special education services.

• Participates as a health professional on other relevant teams and at appropriate conferences and meetings.

• Implement policies and procedures regarding control of communicable diseases in accordance with regulations of the State of New Mexico.

• Authorize exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infections and contagious and nuisance diseases, in accordance with regulations of the State of New Mexico.

• Serve as consultant and resource person to staff, parents, and students in identifying community health resources.

• Advise teachers and consult with parents on health matters regarding assessments and screening results for student health issues.

• Participate in in-service, training programs, workshops, and continuing education.

• Oversee and or enter Medicaid billing for students in their care.

• Other duties as assigned by Building Administrator.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 25 pounds regularly, 50 pounds on occasion), reaching, squatting, kneeling, and moving light furniture may be required.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with BOE policy.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary is established by salary schedule.
