SUMMARY
The General Maintenance Worker assists the Boiler Technicians as he tends, inspects, and maintains one or more boilers to produce steam or high temperature water for use in an establishment at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. This is a training position, as there is a shortage of qualified candidates with these skills. Once the skills are mastered, the GMW will be promoted to the Boiler Tender position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
- Maintain and tend one or more boilers to produce steam or high-temperature water for use in an establishment.
- Tends centrifugal chillers.
- Fires boiler.
- Observes and interprets readings on gauges, meters, charts which register various aspects of boiler operation.
- Adjusts controls to ensure safe and efficient boiler operation and to meet demands for steam or high-temperature water.
- May also do one or more of the following: Maintain a log in which various aspects of boiler operation are recorded; clean, oil, make minor repairs, or assist in repair to boiler room equipment, and following prescribed methods, treat boiler water with chemicals and analyze boiler water for such things as acidity, causticity, and alkalinity.
- Employees are required to drive company vehicles on a Federal Installation.
- All other duties as assigned by supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have a minimum of 2 years of work experience.
- Must be qualified to wear a respirator.
- Must have a safe driving record within the past three years and must maintain a valid drivers license.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- High school degree or GED required.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Must have the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, managers and staff members.
