Position: Athletic Trainer
Location: Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, NV
Description:
The AT provides performance enhancement (pre-habilitation), tailored strength and conditioning, preventive maintenance, and referrals to the MTF if needed. The candidate shall evaluate and provide pre-habilitative services to individual fighter aircrew. Pre-habilitation is intended to strengthen the core musculoskeletal (MSK) system to enhance resistance to neck and back injury. Also, overall MSK strengthening and healthy lifestyle education is addressed as part of an overall health maintenance program to enhance injury resistance. Such overall strength and conditioning, focusing on neck and back, will improve the overall quality of life for fighter aircrew.
Duties:
- Develop Individualized Program (IP) for each member served: The AT, working with other team members will develop an IP for each member being trained. The goals of this IP are to increase physical conditioning and overall health to minimize the risk of neck and back injury and to minimize the severity of any injury experienced by the member.
- Program Implementation Phase: After an IP has been developed the AT will guide ongoing implementation of the program.
- Provide services within the AT’s scope and standard written protocol of practice as defined by the ACC Athletic Trainer CONOP defined by the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer Standards of Professional Practice Analysis and state clinical practice guidelines.
- Evaluate all musculoskeletal injuries that affect readiness and provide rehabilitative programs. Fully communicate with referring provider (if necessary) in a fully HIPAA compliant fashion during the full duration of sessions with regard to personnel’s progress and return to duty status.
- Advise unit commanders on matters related to injury prevention, sports medicine, and rehabilitation.
- Identify opportunities for improvement. Develop protocols and standard operating procedures (SOP) for fitness programs.
- Advise unit commanders of administrative matters, including providing recommendations on additional tools and resources to enhance the OHWS rehabilitative program.
- Advise unit commanders of injury prevention new developments, including review of equipment, products, regiments, and literature to ensure that the OHWS program continues to improve.
- Communicate with the command and servicing MTF when an aircrew member has a medical condition or injury requiring medical care outside the scope of practice of the Athletic Trainer or affecting mission performance.
- Refer Fighter Aircrew personnel with a new duty-limiting condition to the Unit Commander who may also provide to the servicing MTF.
- Ensure safe and effective operation of equipment and contribute to a safe working environment. Report potential safety concerns/risks to the command immediately.
- Attend annual required training IAW guiding instructions.
- ATs will provide clinical care as authorized permitted by the AF, DoD, DHA instructions and standard written protocol agreement. Per the ACC/SG CONOP, all care will be direct supervision of a credentialed MTF provider ((privileged physician or physical therapist with the commensurate credentials). Guidance will be provided by the MTF, consistent with the written standard written protocol agreement.
- Will fully document all care, including evaluations and treatment plans, in the aircrew member’s electronic health record (HER) AHLTA / MHS Genesis as required by instructions, including DoDI 6040.45, and coordinate flight aeromedical disposition with the squadron flight surgeon. Safety of flight concerns require immediate notification (see paragraph 4.1.3).
- Will complete and sign the Written Standard Protocol Agreement as outlined in the ACC Athletic Training CONOP and ensure that no care is provided which is not authorized in the Written Standard Protocol Agreement. If there is any ambiguity, the contractor will contact the MTF/SGH prior to providing the care.
- Make appropriate referrals through the clinical supervisor for performance related issues outside of the Athletic Trainer scope of practice/written standard protocol agreement.
- Conduct peer review in accordance with DHA-PM 6025.13, AFI 44-119 and local MDG policy for non-privileged providers. This will include Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE) and routine Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) completed by a privileged provider with a skillset commensurate with the care provided by the AT or by another credentialed AT at the same location.
- ATs will comply with all initial, quarterly, and annual training as required by the HOST MTF. These trainings may include but are not limited to infection prevention and control computer based training, and other safety training as required by the MTF, AF, and DHA.
- Provide Human Performance and Rehabilitative trending metrics reports. Metrics will capture aircrew perceptions of neck and back pain, and perceptions of overall effectiveness of the OHWS program. Relevant factors for the human performance metrics will include musculoskeletal: strength, endurance, movement quality, mobility, flexibility, and range of motion. Other metrics may be requested as the program matures and new information is available to guide new measures to improve aircrew performance and to improve the OHWS program.
Required Qualifications:
- Possess a master’s degree in athletic training or master’s degree in a related field (from an accredited university) and must be a current licensed Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) process.
- Possess 24 months of demonstrated experience performing primary duties as an Athletic Trainer. Athletic training experience, primary duties, must be performed in professional, collegiate sports, and/or military setting.
- Must show demonstrated performance as an Athletic Trainer within the last 2 years.
- Possess a certification through the NATA as a certified Athletic Trainer.
- Experience and certification in the field of strength and conditioning through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) (or equivalent) is recommended, but not required.
- Possess oral and written communication skills in order to meaningfully interact with peers, outside agencies, vendors, providers, and Military Health System (MHS) stakeholders to exchange information, provide briefings,
- presentations, research, and develop metrics to demonstrate or advance effective and efficient case aircrew neck and back pain prevention.
- Skill in effective team dynamics in order to facilitate the exchange of information/education, enhance goal achievement behavior, and identify changes in system or policy at any level.
- Possess current certification in basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to include Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training.
- Ability to create and present computer-generated outcome analysis information in order to provide timely and effective peer and higher-level educational programs or project briefings.
- Knowledge of computers and software applications in order to conduct data collection, tracking, trending, and analysis.
- Skill in use of research tools in order to critically evaluate existing practices, opportunities, and outcomes.
- Knowledge and skill in using quality and risk management programs and processes to identify issues to improve practice and ensure compliance.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations, professional code of ethics, AF guidance, DoD guidance, and practice standards in order to ensure adherence within legal and professional parameters.
