The Shop Mechanic diagnoses and repairs dump trucks and tractor-trailers. Other duties of the Shop Mechanic include inspecting vehicles, performing routine service, and keeping records of work done. Day-to-day duties expected include the analysis of trucks to determine what is wrong in unique circumstances and the use of testing equipment following repairs to ensure that vehicles are safe to drive.

- Crawls under or climbs in or on vehicles or equipment for maintenance and repair inspections.
- Repairs, removes, and replaces moving parts and other components of vehicles, equipment, or machinery.
- Disassembles, repairs, removes, and replaces parts of engines, transmissions, drive assemblies, brakes, and clutches of vehicles, equipment, or machinery.
- Tunes, adjusts and regulates equipment engines, valves, pumps, carburetors, and other mechanical components with variable settings.
- Lubricates and services vehicles, equipment, or machinery and maintains accurate records of such service.
- Requests repair parts and lubrication supplies as needed.
- Helps workers of other crafts when not engaged in lubrication, service, maintenance, and repair work.
- Maintains accurate records on truck lubrication, service, and repairs.
- Work harmoniously, cooperatively, and courteously with others at all times.
- Follow directions and instructions from supervisors.
- Perform various tasks and duties that may often change as the work conditions require.
- Work within defined standards of accuracy.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Must have a valid driver's license and clean MVR.
- Certificate from college or technical school; or twelve months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to use arms and hands to reach for, handle, and manipulate objects.
- Ability to perform frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted.
