Nature of Work:
The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for the intake of clients and preparing them to be seen by the Medical Practitioners. The MA performs office skills, obtains baseline physical data, assists in the efficient operation of the Medical Clinic, provides primary maintenance of the laboratory, and assists the medical staff as necessary. The Medical Assistant works under the primary supervision of the Nurse Supervisor and general supervision by the Family Practice Physician.
Essential Functions:

Laboratory duties: (in conjunction with other ancillary medical staff)
- Phlebotomy
- Conducts and documents quality control checks on all lab equipment – Accuchek
- HCG tests and laboratory refrigerator temperature.
- Records all on-site lab results on proper forms and maintains logs for on-site labs.
- Maintains patient log for off-site labs, records receipt of lab results and distribute to appropriate medical practitioner.
- Maintains laboratory supplies.
- Able to perform all waived laboratory tests and understand point of care testing procedures.
- Follows all Policies and Procedures for Lab.
- Maintenance of equipment, such as vaccine and specimen storage units, diagnostic equipment.
- Maintenance of sterile instruments.
- Assist practitioners as needed during their examinations.
- Follow Patient Preparation Guidelines and updates.
- Provide child/adult caretakers with information on the immunizations to be administered, assist in completing the necessary forms for immunization administration, and administer immunizations and skin test.
- Assist the medical practitioners as a patient advocate and in other ways consistent with the MA training.
- Disinfect re-usable clinic equipment.
- Keep exam rooms clean and stocked.
- Empty biohazard bags into biohazard container/bin after every clinic.
- Usage of EKG machine.
- Performs SVN treatments
- Performs patient call backs.
- Calls in prescriptions to pharmacy.
- Understands medical terminology.
- Confirms authorization for referrals to outside facilities per Family Practice Physician.
- As per Medical Assistant training, able to perform immunizations, skin testing, and other injections, such as Depo-Provera injections and antibiotic injections.
- May provide at-home and/or mobile Medical Assistant services.
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
Experience and Training:
- Medical Assistant (MA) Certificate from an accredited educational institution.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a clinic or family practice outpatient setting working with pediatric and adult patients.
Additional Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
- Must pass Driver Insurance Carrier’s requirements.
- Must obtain a HIPAA certification within 2 weeks of hire.
- Must possess and maintain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Must have an updated Immunization (IZ) Record.
- Must submit a recent report of Tuberculosis (TB) skin test upon employment and provide an update annually.
- Must pass Arizona DPS Fingerprint Clearance (Class I & II).
- Must pass a substance abuse testing upon employment and submit to a random testing during the course of employment.
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to communicable disease & bloodborne pathogens, unpredictable environmental conditions, physical requirements.
- Exposure to communicable diseases such as COVID-19 or bloodborne pathogens is a risk of this position.
- Unpredictable environmental conditions range from working in a climate-controlled office/clinic setting to working outside, in extreme temperatures, or in spaces with poor ventilation.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and drive in the Tucson Urban area.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit; balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- The employee must have the ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
Supervisory Status:
- Non-supervisory; Reports to Medical Business Office Manager
