DEPARTMENT: Natural Cultural Resources- Fisheries




JOB SUMMARY: Surveys and Sampling primarily include freshwater, estuary and marine fish, shellfish and zooplankton sampling and monitoring habitat and environmental conditions. Surveys and Sampling work can be strenuous at times, working from boats at remote field locations under inclement weather, or conducting stream surveys and sampling adult salmon on spawning grounds that can require walking long distances over difficult terrain and weather conditions. Sampling in regional fisheries, State and Tribal hatcheries, assisting with laboratory processing and analysis of samples and other duties may also be required as assigned by the Salmonid Enhancement Scientist. Hatchery Operations and Maintenance work will include all aspects of raising fish and maintaining hatchery equipment and facilities, ranging from ponds and grounds maintenance, to capturing and spawning returning adult salmon, incubating eggs, rearing, tagging and releasing the fish. Duties include annually spawning Chinook and Coho salmon at State and tribal fish hatcheries and spawning chum salmon returning to Battle Creek Hatchery on Tulalip Bay. General fish culture duties include feeding fish, cleaning ponds and raceways, monitoring production numbers, fish growth, feed fed, mortalities, conducting equipment maintenance and repair.



This is a full-time position that involves approximately equal time split between Field Surveys and Sampling work and Hatchery Operations and Facility Maintenance work. These are only approximate times for these types of work; there may be overlap and duties assigned.



COMPENSATION: $18.39 hr.





MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION



    High School Diploma or GED equivalent.





MINIMUM RELATED EXPERIENCE



  • Three (3) months experience sampling fish and/or working at State or Tribal fish hatcheries.

  • Three (3) months experience with data entry.

  • Experience identifying juvenile salmon species is preferred.

  • Fisheries/natural resources work experience is preferred.






REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/PREREQUISITES



  • WA State Driver License (Personal Auto Insurance Required)

  • Must adhere to the Motor Vehicle Regulations (Abstract Required)

  • Must complete an agility exam to determine if physically capable of performing job duties.

  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check.





TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a regular Full-Time position.
