What are the responsibilities and job description for the Radiation Safety Officer position at Tulane University Staff?
This position is responsible for supervising the daily operations of the Tulane University (TU) Radiation Safety Program. The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) has authority to approve new radioactive material or radiation-producing device users and protocols, stop work when there is an imminent health or safety hazard, and interface with regulators, Tulane University administration and principal investigators. The RSO is responsible for maintaining the Tulane Broadscope Radioactive Material License and the Tulane Radiation Safety Program. In addition, the RSO is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a compliant Laser Safety Program that incorporates best practices and protective measures. In addition, the RSO will supervise the Assistant RSO. This position is considered essential for certain campus emergencies and is expected to remain in campus allocated locations when called upon to do so.
- Knowledge of radiation protection principles and standards, radiation detection, instrumentation and counting statistics, dose and radiation shielding calculation and modeling, computer hardware interfaces and state and federal radiation safety regulations.
- Must be able to get Laser Safety Officer certification within 24 months of hire.
- Must be willing and able to pass all components of the Certified Health Physicist exam within 48 months of hire.
- Radiation safety experience in a university or research setting.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations, consensus standards and guidelines including but not limited to OSHA, EPA, DEQ, DHH, ADA, DHS, NFPA, DOT, ANSI, ASHRAE and Louisiana Building & Fire Code.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.
- Knowledge of and ability to operate radiation detection and analytical equipment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all work performed.
- Strong administrative, organizational, and analytical skills, plus the ability to exercise discretion, make independent judgment decisions, and handle emergency situations.
- Ability to effectively manage subordinate staff.
- High emotional IQ and ability to effectively manage compliance expectations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS : The position occasionally requires extended periods of walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting and carrying. Use of personal protective equipment (including respiratory protection), protective clothing, and working in extreme hot, cold or other restrictive or uncomfortable environments is also required. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid driver's license.
