Associate General Counsel for Medical MalpracticeOffice of the General Counsel - HSC Associate University CounselLocation : New Orleans, LASummaryThis position reports to the General Counsel and works with the School of Medicine leadership, including clinical providers and the Graduate Medical Education office, to provide advice on a variety of legal matters regarding the clinical enterprise. The primary duties and responsibilities include : Review all complaints of medical malpractice and either handle the Medical Review Panels (MRP) in-house or select and manage external counsel.Advise the School of Medicine leadership and clinical providers on matters involving provider licenses, medical staff issues, patient safety, and consent forms for medical treatment and practices.Provide medico-legal advice and risk and quality improvement assistance to University leadership.Monitor adverse events and occurrences to identify potential liability exposure and obtain information to advise the healthcare provider and the Medical Director of the Tulane University Medical Group (Faculty Practice Plan).Advise healthcare providers on day-to-day legal issues such as informed consent, patient termination, physician departures, and the reporting of potential claims.Manage the Patients’ Compensation Fund qualification and enrollment.Prepare PCF institutional applications and materials for the annual actuarial report.Serve on committees as requested.Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesExcellent written communication skills; strong verbal and written communication skills in presenting complex legal principles in layman terms to senior administrators, physicians, and faculty.Executive presence and strong interpersonal skills, with experience interfacing with a wide variety of key stakeholders; a strong collaborator and team-oriented.Strong work ethic with a “can do” attitude. Self-starter, quick study, and ability to manage deadlines.Familiarity and experience with the business operations of academic medical centers.High moral and ethical standards that reflect honesty, integrity, and reliability.Required Education and / or ExperienceJ.D. degree from an accredited American Law School.Minimum of 7 years of experience in healthcare law.Current license to practice law in Louisiana.Licensed in good standing without any instances of suspension, revocation, censure, or other adverse events in any jurisdiction.Preferred Qualifications3 years of experience in a healthcare profession such as Registered Nurse, Pharmacist, or Medical Technologist.Compensation InformationThis position is classified as "exempt, salaried" and is assigned to pay grade 29PREM.
