Job Summary

Under general supervision, prepares, paints and maintains interior and exterior surfaces of County buildings by performing the following duties.

Job Description

All candidates conditionally offered transfer, promotion, or initial hiring into a DOT / safety- sensitive position shall submit to testing for drugs and alcohol and test negative before performing any job functions that are safety-sensitive or requires a CDL. External job applicants with a confirmed positive drug or alcohol test result shall be denied employment and shall be required to wait one year before applying for another position within Tulsa County.

Essential Job Functions

  • Paint walls, ceilings, furniture, and furnishings.
  • Prepare wood, metal, plaster, and sheet rock surfaces for painting by filling cracks, holes, and scratches with metal or wood putty and spackling paste.
  • Remove old finishes with paint remover.
  • Assist in mixing and blending paints and stains to proper color and consistency.
  • Seal, paint, stain, and finish surfaces using brushes, rollers, paint spraying equipment, and hand tools.
  • Sand surfaces between coats.
  • Apply dry wall tape and joint compound cover over sheet rock joints with a broad knife.
  • Sand dry taped surfaces lightly before painting.
  • Transport tools, equipment and supplies to job site.
  • Perform snow removal, sand bagging and cleaning of properties.
  • Respond quickly to emergency situations, summoning additional assistance as needed.
  • Maintain safe working conditions; identify and correct or report unsafe conditions in work areas.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skill in mixing paints and stains; and in the application of paints with a brushes, rollers, or spraying equipment.

Knowledge of painting methods; of mixing and blending paints; and of departmental policies and procedures.

Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgement; to discriminate between colors; to maintain the physical stamina necessary to perform heavy manual labor; and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has not supervisory responsibilities.

Education and / or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and broad trade knowledge equivalent to two years of training received in a formal painters apprentice program; and over two years full-time paid employment as a painter or a related position; or any equivalent combination of education or experience, substituting one additional year of satisfactory full-time paid employment for one year of the required education with a maximum substitution of two years.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations with customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and read fractions. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, of diagram form. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Oklahoma driver's license
