Pay Range: $115,000 - $165,000
This range represents the anticipated low and high end of the salary for this position. Actual salary rates will vary and are based on factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and experience. Tunista Construction is a highly experienced and qualified heavy civil Native Alaskan DBE contracting firm performing work throughout Washington State, with sister companies that operate all over the world.

What can you expect?
As the Civil Estimator II, you will work onsite in Tacoma, WA and will be an important part of the estimating team that has overall responsibility for the creation of estimates produced by the Estimating Department or may lead estimates as an individual. You will be integral to the estimating process for all projects bid and awarded, and assist with establishing standardized procedures, methods, and processes for estimating and training.
How will you do it?
- Collaborate with owners, project managers, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers to gather information for accurate cost estimation.
- Conduct site visits if necessary and assess to gather relevant data for estimation purposes.
- Prepare and present accurate and detailed estimates to management and clients, highlighting key cost components and potential risks.
- Continuously update and maintain a database of costs, prices, and relevant information to improve estimation accuracy and efficiency.
- Monitor industry trends, material costs, and market conditions to stay updated with changes that may impact project costs.
- Work along with the Director of Estimating with day-to-day estimating needs.
- Develop takeoffs from plans using Bluebeam and On-screen Takeoff software.
- Create estimates using Heavy Construction Systems Specialists (HCSS) HeavyBid software.
- Create material orders, estimates, work orders, change orders, invoicing, and documentation storage using Procore.
- Utilize software and tools to prepare detailed cost estimates, including materials, labor, equipment, and overhead expenses.
- Provide correct and accurate estimation or calculation of expenses.
- Ensure timely completion of estimates.
- Responsible for estimating multiple heavy civil projects simultaneously and bidding self-performed civil construction projects.
- Review and examine data and documents such as analysis reports, purchase orders, and subcontracts.
- Work directly with the senior company managers to finalize all processes when using HCSS Heavy Bid.
- Manage the conformity of all projects bid estimates for the creation and use of budget cost data.
- Review project plans and specifications and coordinate with the team to confirm the complete scope.
- Solicit subcontractor and/or supplier information & pricing.
- Prepare instructions to bidders, bid form, and other bid solicitation information as required.
- Review and manage the scoping of specialty contractor bids.
- Coordinate technical proposal requirements with the Marketing Department.
- Analyze alternate means and methods to determine the most economical path for the project and company.
- Build effective relationships with customers, design team, specialty contractors, suppliers, and user groups that reflect and support company core values and meet or exceed the customer's expectations.
- Responsible for managing the estimating job folders to ensure proper documentation is maintained.
- Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong understanding of civil engineering principles, construction methods, and materials.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently when necessary.
- Read and understand civil drawings, construction plans, specifications, and the scope of work.
- Knowledge of construction, architectural, and building industry-standard operating practices/procedures.
- Knowledge of basic revenue models, project ledger, and cost-to-completion projections.
- Knowledge of procurement rules and regulations.
- Ability to prepare with a high level of accuracy accurate budgets and cost estimates, in-depth knowledge of fiscal management principles and procedures.
- Effective professional communication and interpersonal skills concerning:
- Internal and external written, graphical, and verbal communications.
- Presentations.
- Negotiation.
- Working with other departments and personnel to accomplish Tunista Construction’s objectives.
- Skills in organizing resources, establishing priorities, meeting strict deadlines, and general time management.
- Ability to participate in industry, client, and community relations to enhance company image.
- Ability to facilitate the transfer of information on successful projects including during Job Kick-off Meetings.
- Ability to participate in periodic reviews and visits to projects as appropriate.
- Ability to prepare pricing of change impacts as required.
- Ability to prepare and maintain bid calendar and ensure timely completion of estimates and job handoff.
- Ability to compile and manage database for information on products, vendors, subcontractors, and government requirements.
- Excellent analytical and forecasting skills; ability to draw conclusions and justify decisions.
- Ability to read construction plans and specifications.
- Ability to use a standard desktop computer or laptop with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Project, Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, and computer applications for construction estimating such as HCSS and other estimating software.
- Ability to create, read, and understand complex contract documents.
- Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with customers and organizations and have exceptional follow-up skills.
- Ability to actively listen and provide high-quality customer service.
- Ability to do business ethically with customers, vendors, and co-workers.
- Ability to professionally communicate the basis for individual work product when in a highly stressed environment.
- Ability and willingness to follow Company policies.
- Ability to perform mathematical computations related to construction cost estimating, detect unobvious facts and issues, and exercise resourcefulness in resolving problems.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ability to travel for work-related purposes up to 25% of the time.
Who is Tunista Construction looking for?
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or similar degree; a minimum of 7 years’ construction experience may be considered instead of a degree.
- Proficiency in estimation software and tools.
- WSDOT, Sound Transit, US Army Corps of Engineers, and other federal construction estimating experience is required.
- Valid state driver’s license and must be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Tunista Construction’s Driving Policy.
- Ability to pass a drug, driving, and background screening.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five (5) years’ related Construction experience preferred.
- Experience with scheduling, subcontracts, submittals, quality control, and safety preferred.
