Long Neck Water Company, established in 1997 by nine local manufactured home community owners, is dedicated to protecting and managing the local water supply in Sussex County, Delaware. We are currently seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Utility Worker to join our team. This role is crucial in the inspection, sampling, maintenance, and repair of public water facilities and equipment in the water distribution system, as well as providing exceptional customer service to our valued customers. Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment, machinery, and specialized equipment used in the operation and maintenance of the water systems
- Install, read, test, operate, repair, and maintain water meter systems and components, as well as water distribution systems and lines
- Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes
- Inspect assigned machinery and vehicles prior to use each day, including spot-checking fluid levels and checking for damage
- Complete Work Orders (Pre-Maintenance, Repair, After Hours, and Customer Service)
- Perform other manual work in connection with the maintenance of Long Neck Water Company assets
- Continuously observe work site and equipment to detect and protect against unsafe or hazardous operating conditions
- Assist in maintaining and repairing all company Water Plants and other Building assets
- Handle and address customer complaints such as high usage, water quality, information, and education
- Cooperate and assist with work assignments with other departments and companies as needed
- Perform other job duties as assigned to support office operations
Qualifications
- Ability to perform strenuous manual labor as the job requires frequent walking, bending, stooping, squatting, lifting, moving, and carrying equipment, tools, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds
- Can perform heavy manual work for an extended period, under hot, wet, or cold weather conditions
- Ability to communicate well with supervisors and co-workers
- Ability to handle various hand and power tools and heavy equipment
- Ability to disassemble, diagnose, repair, and reassemble various types of pumps, motors, controls, circuits, plumbing, and machinery
- Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints, site plans, manuals, and catalogs
- Ability to take measurements and readings with manual or electronic testing devices
- Strong organization skills, attention to detail, and follow-up skills
- Willingness to observe all safety precautions for protection against accidents, dangerous fluids, chemicals, etc.
- High school diploma is preferred
- Can respond to instruction and can acquire skills quickly through on-the-job training
- Can understand and follow oral and written instructions given in English
Hours
Daily hours are from Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm. In response to emergencies or weather events, you will be required to work on weekends, evenings, or holidays as required by the needs of the business. You will be required to be “on-call” for scheduled periods of time. You will be expected to report to work upon short notice (i.e., 45 minutes) to respond to an emergency.
