Description
Relief employees receive no benefit package and serve at the pleasure of their department head. Relief positions are temporary positions and may have either a fixed schedule or be used on a fill in basis.
Under direct or general supervision, performs a wide variety of duties associated with the various functions of the Sheriff's Department, which may include patrol activities, court bailiff, serving civil papers, transporting inmates or processing abandoned vehicles; provides information and assistance to the public; and performs related work as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direct or general supervision from assigned Sheriff's Sergeant. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Special Services Deputy Recruit Relief: This is the entry-level class in the series. Incumbents initially are given detailed supervision and are assigned as support and will learn to preform assignments in one or more of the following departments: patrol, court support, inmate transportation, vehicle abatement, civil process/records/coroner function. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.
Special Services Deputy Relief: This is the Basic P.O.S.T.-qualified level class in the series. Incumbents have increased responsibility when performing the full range of assigned duties in one or more of the following departments: patrol, court support, inmate transportation, vehicle abatement, civil process/records/coroner function. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Special Services Deupty Recruit Relief by the completion of a Basic P.O.S.T. academy. Positions at this level receive instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Peace officer powers may be conferred by the appointing authority to incumbents as Reserve Deputy Sheriffs pursuant to Penal Code Section 830.6.
Positions in the Special Services Deputy Relief class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the Special Services Deputy Relief-level are normally filled by advancement from the Relief Recruit-level requiring completion and graduation from a Basic P.O.S.T. academy and after demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.
These Special Services Deputy Relief classification functions as peace officers within the authority and limits of California Penal Code Sections 830.1(a) and 832.

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
- Performs a variety of routine law enforcement duties in support of specific functions of the Sheriff's Department.
- Enforces federal, state and local laws and ordinances relating to public safety and welfare; performs all duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations and standards of safety.
- May perform general peace officer duties, including but not limited to patrolling assigned areas of the County, monitoring property security, responding to emergency calls and/or public calls for assistance, responding to alarms, enforcing laws and ordinances and issuing verbal warnings and citations; apprehending and arresting criminal suspects, securing and controlling crime scenes, seizing property and/or criminal evidence, maintaining public order, enforcing traffic regulations and responding to accidents, etc.
- May assist with criminal, coroner, narcotics and other investigations. Interviews witnesses, complainants and victims; interrogates suspects; gathers physical evidence and preserves it for court; provides case follow-up as needed.
- Provides testimony and presents evidence in court as necessary.
- May serve as court bailiff, maintaining court security, order and decorum during court proceedings; prepares court room in accordance to established practices; assists the judge and jury as directed; calls the court to order; escorts witnesses to and from court; swears in witnesses; assumes control of court facility during emergencies.
- Delivers legal papers to and from the court; serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil and other official papers.
- Subdues or arrests persons for crimes committed in either the officer's presence or at the direction of a presiding judge.
- Assists with search and rescue operations.
- Provides emergency aid and assistance to incapacitated persons and requests additional response or evaluation as necessary.
- Transports jail inmates to and from court appearances, medical appointments, work activities and/or other destinations as directed.
- May process abandoned vehicles by identifying registered owners, arranging for and notifying owners of impoundment.
- Conducts criminal and/or employment background investigations as requested.
- Prepares accurate and detailed incident reports, and prepares and maintains other records, reports and logs as required.
- Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles.
- Receives and responds to citizen inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance.
- Attends training to maintain and improve job knowledge, skills and certifications; maintains proficiency in the use and care of firearms and other police-issued equipment.

Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record.

- Possession of a Basic Certificate issued by the California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.).
- Possession and maintenance of firearms qualification.
- Must be able to meet physical, psychological and background standards.
