Job Goal

To support sound educational programs for children who cannot sufficiently benefit from regular classroom programs and building principals in supervision of building level special education staff.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Interact with parents and advocates of students with disabilities for the purpose of defining and implementing services and addressing the unique needs of each qualifying student.
  • Collaborate with district personnel and peers for the purpose of implementing and maintaining services and/or programs.
  • Coordinate program components, support needs and materials for the purpose of delivering services, which conform to established district, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Assist in the creation and annual implementation of IDEA required programs and FY budget, including Project Application and amendments for all special education students.
  • Provide assistance in developing proposals, new programs, budgets and grants.
  • Evaluate special education programs and curriculum.
  • Facilitate meetings and ensure processes are adequate for the delivery of Special Education Services.
  • Attend IEP meetings in an advisory capacity to ensure compliance and to respond to specific parent concerns as needed.
  • Monitor assigned programs and/or projects for compliance with district, state, and federal curriculum and/or instructional objectives.
  • Participate in personnel functions (e.g. recruitment, hiring, evaluations, etc.) to maintain adequate staffing, to ensure the objectives of special education programs are achieved within budget.
  • Prepare written documents for the purpose of responding to inquiries, conveying information, or memorializing meetings.
  • Assist with presentation of information on programs, services, regulations, etc.
  • Supervise personnel for the purpose of ensuring the development and implementation of services based on student needs.
  • Assist other personnel as may be required to support the completion of their work.
  • Collaborate with school administrators to develop programming, and schedules for special education students and teachers at the local schools.
  • Address and resolve parent complaints.
  • Work with District Test Coordinator to develop guidelines for implementing state and district wide assessment accommodations.
  • Collaborate with Curriculum Department, manage and distribute materials, provide and arrange professional development for special education teachers.
  • Lead and attend staff meetings/trainings as applicable; serve on staff committees.
  • Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development, for keeping current with literature, new research findings, for attending appropriate professional meetings and conferences, and to maintain any credits and/or continued education for maintenance of licensure/qualifications required for the position.
  • Maintain and accept responsibility for any district owned fixed asset item assigned to employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable use.
  • Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Regular, dependable, in person, and punctual attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Read, understand, and abide by Employee Code of Conduct Policy, GAB, all other district, state and federal policies, and procedures and protocols as established by TPSD and the Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct.
  • Assist the Director of Special Education in ensuring adherence to all local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve months. Salary to be established by the Board.
