What are the responsibilities and job description for the Ammonia Mechanic position at Turkey Hill?
- This is a 3rd shift position. Hours are 11:00 P.M. to 7:30 A.M.
- Maintain a safe and clean work area. Use and practice the Process Safety Management (PSM) system.
- Troubleshoot work related problems by using past job experience. Suggest improvements in work methods and procedures by discussing each problem with the supervisor.
- Read and understand blueprints and/or schematic drawings. Make and install labeling on related equipment and piping.
- Be mask qualified using the filter fit test.
- Install and repair industrial and commercial systems according to blueprints and engineering specifications, use knowledge of related systems, structural layout, and function and design components. Maintain and repair equipment systems using hand tools and portable power tools. Monitor, isolate and confirm complete pump-down of a particular component or system by following SOP.
- Have a working knowledge of the following systems: refrigeration, heating, sanitizer, boiler and cooling tower chemicals, boilers, air handling units, fire systems, and compressed air systems. Replace or adjust defective or worn parts to repair systems.
- Evacuate and recharge the refrigeration systems prior to start up and after repairs. Perform oil draining and inspect air handlers for defrost, etc. and troubleshoot and repair the Micro Master Control.
- Clean or assist other workers in cleaning systems and auxiliary equipment, use scrapers, wire brushes and appropriate solvents. After notification compare daily reading with specifications to evaluate performance of system and adjust or replace parts as indicated.
- Dismantle malfunctioning systems and test and verify components, use appropriate electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment (multi-meters, gage set, etc.). Screw, bolt, rivet, solder, and braze parts to assemble structural and functional components, such as motors, controls, switches, gauges, wiring harnesses, valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, cores, and pipes. Start systems, observe operation, read gauges and instruments, and adjust mechanisms, such as valves, control, and pumps to control level of fluid, pressure, and temperature in system.
- Align machines and equipment use hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers, and plumb bobs. Assemble and install valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals such as iron, steel, brass, and plastic use hand tools, and power tools. Perform Preventative Maintenance (PM) using PM schedule. Repair and lubricate machines and equipment. Adjust valves according to specifications.
- Observe and maintain pressure, temperature, feed water regulators, and burners. Start and shutdown boiler systems. Observe boiler and auxiliary units to detect malfunctions and make repairs, such as change burners and tighten pipes and fittings. Operate and maintain automatic/manual-fired boilers to generate steam that supplies heat, water or power for buildings or industrial processes.
- Run periodic fire pump test and monitor fire system.
- Assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications. Bend tubing to required angle by use of pipe-bending tools. Cut and thread pipe use cutters, cutting torch, or saw and pipe-threading machine and then fit part into the system. Test pipe system with appropriate liquid or gas.
- Install and repair plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, water heaters, and heat exchangers. Repair and maintain plumbing by replace washers in leaky faucets, mend burst pipes, and open clogged drains.
- Use knowledge of water treatment and take appropriate action if system alarms activate.
- Complete purchase requisitions for parts and supplies.
- Ability to work overtime, which will include Saturdays and Sundays, as determined by manufacturing requirement.
- Works effectively with department and cross-functional teams to define and implement process improvements that provide value to the customer
- Follow established programs, policies, and practices to produce safe quality foods that meet regulatory and company requirements.
- Support the development, implementation, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the Safe Quality Food (SQF) 2000 Systems. Is accountable to the Turkey Hill Food Safety and Quality Principles.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Technical (electrical) Certification required
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must work well in a team environment
- Maintain adherence to work hours scheduled specifically starting, ending, lunch and break schedules
- Perform all duties within established Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations and safety guidelines
- Be accountable to the Turkey Hill Food Safety and Quality Principles

- The employee must be able to inspect all job-related equipment (office or floor) to ensure it is in good working condition prior to use. Must be able to use hands/fingers to handle (or feel) to operate various types of office equipment.
- Must be able to operate all job-related equipment (powered, hand or office) as required.
- Vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception and adjust focus.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and/or push/pull 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Must have ability to work rotating or non-traditional shifts as needed, including overtime as required by business needs.
- Must be able to work in an environment that contain allergens such as Milk, Soy, Wheat, Peanut, Treenuts, Egg, Shellfish, and Fish.
- Must be able to work in the environment for the position, which may range from extreme heat to extreme cold or from wet/humid to dry/arid.
