What are the responsibilities and job description for the Instrument and Controls Technician position at Turlock Irrigation District?
Equivalent to two (2) years of college level course work in electronics, instrumentation and electrical theory and technology. Equivalent work experience in instrumentation and controls may be substituted for education.
Strong mathematical background in algebra, geometry and trigonometry preferred.
Experience
Successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program in Instrument and Controls or recognized status as a journeyman Instrument & Controls Technician; in an electrical power generation facility.
Skills and Abilities
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in written form on a technical level with coworkers, supervision, other District employees, customers and representatives of other agencies. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties. Work with others in a team environment. Ability to work alone or in conjunction with other employees and make decisions which affect the safe operation of the generation facility, without direct supervision. Ability to think clearly and rationally, and make critical decisions during plant upsets or other emergencies.
Technical and Analytical
Knowledge of: principles methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the installation, calibration, maintenance and repair of electrical, and electronic instrumentation controls and systems. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, plans, specifications, electrical schematics, logic drawings, and technical manuals. Ability to competently use various types of electronic tools, test and calibration equipment.
Administration and Operations
Use independent judgment and initiative. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Maintain detailed calibration records and reporting procedures. Requisition parts or materials as needed. Participate in preventive maintenance program. Enter and complete work orders, record device condition, pull required parts from inventory, record parts used, and work performed. Serve as acting Power Plant Supervisor as assigned.

Necessary Special Requirements
Possession of an appropriate California driver’s license.
This classification may be assigned to work an 8, 10 or 12 hour rotating shift schedule and weekends.
This classification will be required to work a scheduled on-call period.
Employees who are assigned an on-call period must respond to either workstation within forty-five (45) minutes of the time he or she is called out. This classification’s workstations are defined as the Almond Power Plant, the Walnut Energy Center, or other assigned power plant. The on-call employee must obey all applicable traffic laws when responding to a call out.
