Elementary Teacher - Grades 1- 3
Description of Position
Provides an educational program for pupils in grades 1, 2, 3, or a combination thereof, and assists in other school programs as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teaches reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music to pupils in a classroom, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities. Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. Evaluates pupils academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
Communicates with parents through a variety of means. Holds parent conferences when needed to discuss the individual pupil’s progress and interpret the school program. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems. Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest center. Participates in in-service education activities provided by the district and continues his professional growth. Performs basic attendance accounting and gathers data, prepares reports, and updates records as assigned.
Other Duties
Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies, and maintains required inventory records. Insures a comfortable room environment through control of heating, lighting and ventilation to the extent possible. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day. Administers group standardized tests in accordance with district testing program. Participates in curriculum development programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level. Participates in faculty committees and directs pupils in co-curricular activities. May plan and coordinate the work of aides, teacher assistants, and other paraprofessionals. May supervise student teachers. Under the immediate direction of the site administrator.
Qualifications
•Credential: General Elementary, Kindergarten—Primary Class I and II, Standard Elementary (issues on a partial fulfillment basis).
•Education: Bachelor’s degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.
•Experience: Student teaching (8 semester hours or 180 clock hours) or two years of full-time elementary classroom experience.
•Personal qualities: Appearance, grooming, and personality which establish a desirable example for pupils. Ability to meet district standards for physical and mental health. Average or better recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher.
