Position Description: The Claims Manager is responsible for managing and overseeing client disputes and claims within an assigned region, ensuring efficient handling and resolution across multiple claim types. This role requires a strong command of Builders’ Risk claims management, in addition to auto, general liability, professional liability, and pollution claims. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in safeguarding client interests by mitigating financial and operational risk, ensuring compliance with insurance policies, and optimizing claims processes.
Reports to: Reports to a Managing Director in the brokerage.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities*:
- Builders’ Risk Claims Expertise: Serve as the primary resource for Builders’ Risk claims, ensuring comprehensive coverage analysis, strategic risk mitigation, and swift resolution of construction-related claims.
- Ensure timely reporting of all claims to the appropriate insurance carriers and oversee the preparation and submission of claim documentation.
- Collaborate with Operations, Safety, and Legal teams to conduct thorough claim investigations and promptly engage third-party incident investigators when necessary.
- Lead crisis response efforts within the assigned region, providing expert guidance on managing high-risk situations and ensuring proper claims escalation.
- Oversee insurance carrier communications, ensuring the timely assignment of Claims Specialists.
- Maintain and manage comprehensive claims records within the Claims Management System.
- Facilitate the flow of claim-related documentation between clients and carriers in compliance with standard operating procedures.
- Monitor and oversee claim settlements, ensuring appropriate payments are made and disputes are resolved efficiently.
- Analyze claim trends and loss data to inform risk management strategies and recommend adjustments to senior leadership and clients.
- Prepare detailed loss reports, benchmark reports, and other analytical summaries for executive review.
- Manage claim settlements within delegated authority limits, escalating matters to the Director of Claims when necessary.
- Collaborate with Regional Directors to select and oversee legal representation for complex claims.
- Lead litigation strategy and oversight, working closely with clients' leadership and legal teams to drive favorable claim resolutions.
- Review legal documentation related to claims, including litigation and mediation statements.
- Attend trials, mediations, and arbitrations as required to provide claims expertise and ensure alignment with client objectives.
- Provide claims-related guidance during client meetings on safety, environmental, operational, and legal matters.
- Potentially manage a team of claims professionals, assigning claims, providing guidance, and serving as an escalation point for Claims Analysts and Coordinators.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and feedback to claims team members.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Insurance, or Risk Management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Minimum 5 years of experience handling Builders’ Risk claims, with a strong understanding of construction-related risk management.
· In-depth knowledge of Builders’ Risk, auto, general liability, professional liability, and pollution claims processes.
· Strong comprehension of insurance policies, construction contracts, and claims management best practices.
· Familiarity with state and local jurisdictional regulations governing claims and insurance.
· OSHA knowledge and experience preferred; OSHA 30-hour certification is a plus.
· Construction industry experience is highly preferred.
· Strong negotiation and influencing skills, with proven experience in claims resolution.
· Advanced analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to process complex claim data and develop actionable insights.
· Self-motivated professional with strong project management skills and the ability to handle multiple complex claims simultaneously.
· Exceptional interpersonal and team-building skills, with the ability to work effectively across all organizational levels, both internally and externally.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and persuasively.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, risk management information systems, and claims processing software.
· Experience managing and developing remote teams is a plus.
· Limited travel required, including air, train, and vehicle transportation.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
· The role requires frequent sitting, use of hands for handling tools, and extended computer use.
· Occasional travel, including visits to construction sites, office locations, and off-site venues.
· Ability to lift up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 25 pounds occasionally.
· The work environment varies between office settings (quiet to moderate noise levels) and construction sites (exposure to moving equipment, airborne particles, weather conditions, and higher noise levels).
· Compliance with company safety policies and procedures is required at all times.
