Flying D Ranch, a wild and historic 113,613-acre bison ranch located in southwest Montana, is seeking a skilled and dedicated Ranch Technician. ABOUT THE POSITION
As a Ranch Technician I, your primary duties focus on the daily husbandry and handling of bison adaptively grazing irrigated fields and the operation and maintenance of extensive irrigation infrastructure and fencing systems. The irrigation consists of center pivots and wheel lines fed via ditches and groundwater. Fencing design ranges from permanent high tensile electric to temporary poly wire.
You will also be responsible for:
- Being a safe, contributing, and conscientious team member.
- Low-stress herding of bison on ATV.
- Feeding and care of bison in corrals.
- Processing, weighing and shipping of bison in modern corral facilities, primarily on foot.
- Building and maintaining fencing, primarily high-tensile and electric fencing.
- Operating and maintaining center pivot and wheel-line irrigation systems, fed by ditches, surface water and groundwater infrastructure.
- Checking, developing and maintaining stock water, including spring development, wells and stock tanks.
- Safe and skillful operation and maintenance of light and heavy equipment, including Pickups, ATVs, skid steers, loaders, tractors and heavy trucks.
- Keeping vehicles, equipment and facilities clean, organized, and presentable.
- Assisting with initial assault duties during wildland fires.
- Complying with all applicable Montana state laws and Ranch policies.
- Performing additional tasks as assigned to support the success and operations of the Ranch.
What this isn’t:
- A management position.
- A high school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience working in animal agriculture, preferably large animals.
- Familiarity with operating ranch equipment such as ATVs, UTVs, and hauling/backing trailers.
- Flexibility to work nights and weekends as required and be on-call 24/7 for emergency response.
- Must be willing to obtain CPR and Wilderness First Aid certifications; training provided by the Ranch.
- This position requires operation of vehicles, and you’ll need to possess a valid driver’s license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment. Your driving record will need to meet the standards and requirements of the Company and the Company’s insurance provider.
- You’ll need to present documentation establishing both identity and employment authorization within three days of hire pursuant to federal law.
- Knowledge of electrical systems, pumps, and/or motors.
- Familiarity with fence construction and maintenance.
- Experience with low-stress livestock handling techniques in corrals and outside.
- Comfortable with operation of heavy equipment, such as tractors and loaders.
- Some experience with cutting and welding.
- Previous mechanical experience for vehicle and equipment repairs and maintenance.

- Stand; sit; walk; move hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.

- Ride an ATV/UTV for extended periods of time on uneven, rough terrain and occasionally on roads and flat terrain while performing ranch duties.

On an occasional basis, you can expect to:
- Lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
You will regularly be exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. You will frequently be exposed to high, precarious places and fumes or airborne particles. You will occasionally be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
