Chief Geotechnical Engineer

Turner Mining Group
Round Mountain, NV Full Time
POSTED ON 4/2/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 6/1/2025

Are you a senior geotechnical leader ready to take the helm at one of the most productive open-pit gold mines in the world? Turner Staffing Group is partnering with a major player in the global mining industry to find an accomplished Chief Geotechnical Engineer for a high-impact role at their flagship open-pit operation in Nevada—one of the best mining jurisdictions globally.

This is your opportunity to lead geotechnical excellence at a world-class mine that poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018, is a continuous improvement leader, and plays a vital role in the economic and social wellbeing of Nye County.

About the Opportunity

As the Chief Geotechnical Engineer, you will own all aspects of ground control and geotechnical strategy—both surface and underground—ensuring operational safety, geotechnical integrity, and regulatory compliance. You'll work cross-functionally to guide mine design, lead risk assessments, implement QA/QC protocols, and influence strategic infrastructure development including the major underground "Phase X" expansion.

This position offers the chance to leave a lasting mark on one of the most dynamic and forward-thinking mining operations in North America.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the development and execution of the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP)
  • Drive all ground control functions: hazard management, incident mitigation, mine design, and monitoring systems
  • Oversee geotechnical design criteria and ensure integration with mine planning
  • Champion geotechnical risk management systems within the Kinross CRM framework
  • Support underground infrastructure development and surface/UG interface planning
  • Direct QA/QC programs and manage external geotechnical consultants
  • Perform advanced geotechnical modeling and analysis using software tools like Rocscience and Map3D
  • Collaborate with operations, geology, and engineering teams to align goals and drive excellence
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and geologists
  • Coordinate site-wide geotechnical monitoring, inspections, and reporting
  • Communicate geotechnical strategies and insights clearly and effectively to stakeholders
  • Uphold strict adherence to safety, environmental, and ethical standards

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
  • 8–12 years of geotechnical experience in mining operations, with both underground and surface exposure
  • Deep knowledge of ground control, rock mass behavior, geotechnical instrumentation, and mine safety protocols
  • Expertise in geotechnical design, hazard analysis, and risk mitigation
  • Familiarity with Vulcan, Deswik, Rocscience, Map3D, and other modeling tools
  • Outstanding leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Strong mentoring ability and experience leading geotechnical teams
  • Valid driver’s license and authorization to work in the U.S.

Why You Should Apply

  • Be the geotechnical authority at a globally recognized mine
  • Shape critical infrastructure and lead high-impact engineering programs
  • Join a values-driven culture committed to continuous improvement, safety, and community investment
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package
  • Enjoy a high quality of life in a location with wide-open spaces and a tight-knit community
