Position Summary:
The Outreach Assistant supports the Outreach Department in preparing for and attending programs in the community. Including but not limited to schools and community events. In addition, the Outreach Assistant aides in maintaining STEAM equipment and helps with other projects within the department.
Physical Requirements:
The physical requirements are typical of an office environment and include sitting, standing, bending, walking, reaching, pushing/ pulling carts weighing over 100 lbs., lifting items weighting up to 50 lbs. and looking at a computer screen for long periods.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree or an Associate’s Degree combined with two years of relevant experience; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
- One (1) – two (2) years previous experience providing customer service to the general public
- Experience in successfully assisting with various types of programming, often technology heavy programs.
- A valid driver’s license

Duties and Responsibilities:
It is the responsibility of every employee of the Tuscaloosa Public Library (TPL) to perform duties necessary to ensure that the Library operates in a professional, efficient and effective manner at all times. The list below is an outline of the primary duties to be performed in this position; however, the list is not all-inclusive and should not be perceived as such. Employees are expected to perform all duties as assigned by their supervisor or chain-of-command (or his/her designee).
Primary Duties:
- Assists in delivering programs, primarily STEAM focused, to audiences within the library, community partners, and local schools.
- Assists in maintaining equipment and other projects within the outreach department.
- Assists library patrons in using the Learning Center equipment and tools, including 3D Printers, recording equipment, robotics, smartboards, raspberry pi, gaming systems, audio/video equipment and computers.
- Collaborates with outside agencies in partnerships that promote use of library services.
- Provides library service to patrons by checking materials in and/or out, processing library card applications and material requests, answering telephone calls, assisting with routine questions, or other library services
- Demonstrates proficiency to work effectively with diverse cultures and an ability to build partnerships across culture.
- Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrates strong customer service skills in interactions with patrons and coworkers.
- Communicates professionally, courteously, and effectively.
- Operates library equipment such as computers, copiers, bar code scanner, book carts, and postage processing equipment, vehicles, and telephone in an appropriate, respectful, efficient manner.
- Works on special projects as assigned.
Salary : $15
