Job Summary
Manages the Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Educational Benefit Programs (Chapter 3 1, 33, 35 and 1606) at Tuskegee University. Review and certify Veterans and Dependent Students’ enrollment to the US Department of Veteran Affairs and ensures compliance with Federal and State requirements.
Essential Job Duties
- Serves as the direct contact for inquiries from Veterans and Dependents regarding VA Benefits offered at Tuskegee University.
- Advises and assists new and returning Veterans and Dependents on available Veteran’s Educational program specifics, eligibility, and enrollment processes.
- Certifies all eligible Veterans and Dependents through the VA Enrollment Manager system.
- Communicate with the Veterans Affairs Office and Alabama State Approving Agency.
- Report changes in enrollment status (academic performance, withdrawals, graduation status) through Enrollment Manager.
- Communicate and respond to inquiry and/or concerns of Veterans and Dependents within established policies and procedures.
- Work collaboratively with the Office of the Bursar, Office of Financial Aid Services and Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Research, Assessment and Planning regarding Veterans and Dependents.
- Refer Veterans and Dependents to appropriate campus-wide Student Support Services to ensure their retention and persistence towards graduation.
- Assist in communicating any questions/concerns on behalf of Veterans and Dependents with Veteran’s Affairs Office to aid in its resolution.
- Assist in the preparation and processing of, all VA required Reports, State Agency Approved Application and/or Compliance Survey site-visits.
- Understand and adhere to FERPA Regulations.
- Apprise Registrar of any internal problems that affects service to Veterans and Dependents.
- Keep up to date on current VA rules and benefits, and complete Annual VA School Certifying Officer renewal credentials.
- Attendance and participation in all required Annual VA training and/or conferences. Serves as an Advisor to the pending Student Veterans Association. Performs other related job duties and responsibilities as requested by the Registrar.
Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training)
- Associate degree.
- At least 1 year of experience working in a College or University environment.
- Strong basic research and Data collection skills
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office (Outlook, PowerPoint , Excel and Spreadsheets)
Additional Qualifications:
- Ability to plan, organize and conduct informational sessions with Tuskegee University’s new and returning Veterans and Dependents during New Student Orientation.
- Ability to create eye-appealing informational flyers with announcements specific to Tuskegee University’s Veterans and Dependents.
Physical Demands
- Ability to operate standard office equipment
- Ability to walk short distances
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and carry parcels, packages and other items
- Ability to view a computer terminal
- Ability to perform data entry and verify information on a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to clearly communicate respectfully, both orally and in writing on a telephone and on a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer or other electronic device.
- Ability to sit at a desk and viewing a display screen for extended periods.
- Routinely requires walking, standing, sitting, pulling (file drawers) and bending
Skills and Attributes
Knowledge:
- Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
- Federal and State Laws related to the Certification of Veterans and Dependents or willingness to learn
- The requirements of the various types of VA Certificate of Eligibility at Tuskegee University (Chapter 31, 33, 35, 1606) or willing ness to learn
