Job Summary
The central supply technician, also known as a sterile processing technician, is responsible for cleaning, sterilizing, assembling, packaging, storing, and distributing medical instruments and supplies associated with the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), ensuring that all equipment is properly prepared and ready for patient use by adhering to strict infection control protocols and maintaining accurate inventory records. The primary role is to provide a reliable supply of sterile medical supplies to various departments within the VTH. The CS Technician reports directly and under the supervision of the CS Supervisor.
Essential Job Duties
- Sterilize medical equipment and instruments and prepare the supplies for use in procedures and surgeries.
- Process medical equipment for sterilization, operating washers and steam autoclaves.
- Assembles, sterilizes, and dispenses surgical instruments, equipment and instrument trays to examination rooms and all clinical areas.
- Organize surgical instrument tray.
- Conduct sterilizer tests and record results.
- Stock crash carts.
- Check surgical or procedural packs for inventory and quality control.
- Receive or pick up soiled instruments from clinical areas for cleaning, sanitizing and sterilization.
- Accurately receives stocks and distributes medical supplies and equipment.
- Assists personnel with specific procedure tray contents and special equipment contents.
- Inspect contents to ensure they are undamaged.
- Receive shipments and sign paperwork upon receipt.
- Remove all empty boxes from the supply areas and takes them to the recycling bin.
- Follow clinic policies and procedures to ensure safety and guidelines are implemented .
- Foster an environment that promotes trust and cooperation among all staff.
- Work collaboratively with clinical faculty, staff and students. Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training)
- High school diploma or equivalent Training in sterile processing is desirable
Physical Demands
- Position requires reaching, bending, stooping and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing and seeing; and working in varying degrees of temperature (heated or air conditioned)
- Ability to lift or carry up to 401bs.

- Ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to handle difficult situations involving pet owners, faculty members, or others in a professional manner.
